This scenery package focuses on Kahului Airport, also identified as PHOG, on the island of Maui in Hawaii. It refines the airport layout in FSX by providing two file variations—one enabling its crosswind runway so both runways are active, and one maintaining the original single-runway operations. Both versions were created by Ray Smith, who designed them using an updated version of ADE. These files introduce expanded parking, improved vehicle pathways, dedicated fuel services, and other structural modifications. Enthusiasts will notice a more authentic feel when navigating around the airport grounds and coordinating arrivals or departures from the tower view.

Enhanced Layout for an Engaging Simulation

The careful coordination of these files ensures a more realistic ground layout. You can opt for the PHOG_ADE_CW_RS.BGL, which activates the shorter crosswind runway (5/23) to help mitigate wind effects during takeoffs and landings. Alternatively, the PHOG_ADE_RS.BGL offers a conventional single-runway method of operation for sim pilots preferring typical procedures. This optional approach is possible because Ray Smith applied advanced ADE functions to ensure accurate geometry while keeping support vehicle routes and taxi signage updated.

Technical Files and Their Roles

PHOG_ADE_CW_RS.BGL
Enables two-runway functionality: runway 5/23 and the primary runway both become active for simultaneous operations.
PHOG_ADE_RS.BGL
Retains the default single-runway setup for those who prefer a more standard layout.
PHOG_ADE_CVX.bgl
Removes generic autogen elements overlapping critical areas, improving visual clarity around the airport.
PHOG_ADE_OBJ.BGL
Incorporates specific scenery objects into the airport environment, such as buildings and static features, enhancing immersion.

Installation Process with Simple Steps

  1. Choose either PHOG_ADE_CW_RS.BGL or PHOG_ADE_RS.BGL, and copy the chosen file along with PHOG_ADE_CVX.bgl into your “Addon Scenery/scenery” folder within FSX.
  2. Place PHOG_ADE_OBJ.BGL into the “Scenery/Global/scenery” folder inside your FSX directory.
  3. Run FSX again. The modifications to Kahului Airport will then become active.

Critical Note on File Usage

Avoid conflicts by using only one PHOG_RS.BGL file at a time. If multiple PHOG files are loaded, you might see incorrect parking or glitchy runway behavior. The PHOG_ADE_CVX.bgl file has no impact on operations but should remain active for proper autogen suppression. Be aware that enabling crosswind runways can result in ATC calling out fictional runway identifiers, which is an intentional consequence of how non-parallel runways get activated in FSX.

Quick Removal Option

If you ever want to revert to the FSX default scenery, just remove all four BGL files associated with this add-on. The default layout will be restored upon your next simulator session.

Recognitions and Helpful Tips

Ray Smith acknowledges Jon Masterson’s ADE Utility (Freeware), along with Jim Vile, whose crosswind technique underpins these enhancements. A useful trick when you are in tower view is to assign a keystroke or controller button to “View track/pan Toggle” in the FSX settings. Activate it to pivot the camera 360 degrees and admire the updated scenery from the control tower rooftop. Deactivate it again to return to your aircraft focus.

Through these modifications, Ray Smith brings a purposeful upgrade to Kahului Airport in FSX, merging technical accuracy with a concentrated effort to replicate real-world conditions. Enjoy a more dynamic flight environment on the beautiful island of Maui, and discover how these files can add a subtle but vital dimension to your simulator experience.
