How do I install and configure Shockwave Lights in FS2004?

How do I install Shockwave Lights in FS2004?

Install the FS2004 build directly into the main Flight Simulator 9 directory, not into an individual aircraft folder or the Effects folder by itself.

  1. Close FS2004. The simulator should not be running while its effects, gauges or aircraft configuration files are changed.
  2. Select the FS2004 or FS9 edition. Do not install files intended only for FSX, even if the package name looks identical.
  3. Choose the correct simulator root. Browse to the directory containing fs9.exe. A common mistake we see is selecting a folder one level too high, which creates a second nested Flight Simulator directory that FS9 never reads.
  4. Preserve the package’s folder structure. The effect files belong under Effects; associated textures, gauges and documentation must remain in the locations specified by the installer. Our guide to FS2004 add-on folders and nested-directory errors covers the underlying folder layout.
  5. Check the installation. Open FS2004’s Effects folder and confirm that the Shockwave .fx files are present. If an older installer could not write into a protected Windows folder, rerun it with administrator permission and point it explicitly at fs9.exe.

Some editions include automatic changes or profiles for selected default aircraft. Back up any aircraft.cfg and panel.cfg files before accepting those changes; third-party aircraft normally require their own configuration.

How do I configure Shockwave Lights for an aircraft?

Configure an aircraft by copying its supplied Shockwave profile or replacing the effect references in that aircraft’s [lights] section.

  1. Back up aircraft.cfg. Keep the original beside it under a different extension or outside the aircraft folder.
  2. Use an aircraft-specific profile when available. Light coordinates are tied to the model’s datum and dimensions, so entries from an unrelated aircraft will usually float beside the wings or sit inside the fuselage.
  3. Find the [lights] section. Each line follows the format light.n = type, longitudinal, lateral, vertical, effect_name. The final field references an effect file without its .fx extension.
  4. Preserve positions when no profile exists. Replace only the final effect name in each existing light line, using the exact FS2004 effect name supplied in the Shockwave documentation.
  5. Check the numbering. Every light.n entry needs a unique number. Keeping the sequence contiguous makes faults and later edits easier to identify.
  6. Reload the aircraft. Switch to another aircraft and back again, or restart FS2004, because an already-loaded aircraft may retain its previous configuration.

What do the FS2004 light type numbers mean?

The type number determines which cockpit switch or keyboard command operates the effect; it does not describe the light’s physical position.

If a landing lamp comes on with the navigation lights, for example, its type is wrong even when the effect and coordinates are correct.

Does Shockwave Lights require a panel gauge?

Only configurations whose supplied instructions specify a controller gauge need a panel.cfg edit. Do not add a guessed gauge line: copy the exact line into the specified 2D or virtual-cockpit section, assign an unused gauge number, and retain a backup.

How do I position a misplaced Shockwave light?

Adjust the three position values relative to the aircraft datum, changing one axis at a time while viewing the aircraft externally at dusk or night.

  • Longitudinal: positive values move the effect forwards; negative values move it aft.
  • Lateral: negative values move it left; positive values move it right.
  • Vertical: positive values move it up; negative values move it down.

Use small increments and reload the aircraft after every edit. Existing stock light coordinates are usually the best starting point because they already match that model’s datum. Copying coordinates from another aeroplane is the main cause of mirrored, floating or buried lights.

Can Shockwave Lights be used with third-party and AI aircraft?

Most conventional FS2004 aircraft can use Shockwave effects when they have editable [lights] entries, but models with custom-coded or modelled lighting may need a dedicated profile.

A lamp built into the visual model cannot be removed through aircraft.cfg, so adding another effect at the same point can produce a doubled halo. AI aircraft also support effects, but fitting numerous bright effects to every traffic model can add unnecessary rendering load in busy areas.

Why are Shockwave Lights missing or not working?

Missing Shockwave lights usually result from an incorrect installation path, an effect-name mismatch or an unsuitable light type.

  • No Shockwave effects appear: confirm that the installer targeted the directory containing fs9.exe and that the required .fx files are under Effects.
  • One lamp is missing: compare the last field in its light.n line with the actual effect filename. Spelling matters, and the configuration entry should omit the .fx extension.
  • Only the default aircraft work: the installer has configured those aircraft but not the add-on. Apply an aircraft-specific profile or edit its [lights] section manually.
  • The wrong switch operates a lamp: correct the type number at the start of that light entry.
  • The lamp glows but the ground stays dark: verify that it is a landing-light entry and enable FS2004’s option for landing lights to illuminate the ground. The visible lamp effect and the simulator’s ground illumination are separate behaviours.
  • The effect is doubled: remove the redundant original configuration line rather than stacking two effects at the same coordinates. A light built into the model may not be removable without editing the model itself.
  • A panel stops loading after a gauge edit: restore the backup and check the panel section, commas and gauge numbering. Also confirm that the package’s gauge files were installed in the required location.

To undo the configuration, restore the backed-up aircraft and panel files first. Use the package’s uninstaller when one is provided rather than deleting effect files individually, because other configured aircraft may still reference them.
