The Airbus A380 is a four-engine, full-length double-deck airliner built for maximum passenger volume, while the A350 is a newer two-engine wide-body family designed for lower trip costs and long-range flexibility. The A380 carries far more people; the A350 burns less fuel per flight, serves more airports and is cheaper to operate.
For our Aviation & Real-World Flying readers, the crucial caveat is that “A350” describes a family. The A380-800 was the only production A380 airliner, whereas the A350 comes principally as the A350-900 and longer A350-1000.

Visually, identification is easy: the A380 has four engines and an upper row of cabin windows extending almost the full fuselage length. The A350 is a twinjet with a characteristic black cockpit-window mask and swept composite wings.
Which is bigger, the A380 or A350?
The A380 is much bigger overall, even though the A350-1000 is approximately 1.1 metres longer.
Length alone causes a common comparison mistake. The A380 is considerably wider and taller, has nearly 15 metres more wingspan and carries passengers on two decks. Its maximum take-off mass can approach 575 tonnes, compared with roughly 283 tonnes for higher-weight A350-900 versions and about 322 tonnes for the A350-1000.

Which is more efficient and easier to operate?
The A350 normally has the lower total trip cost and is easier to deploy across an airline network.
- Fuel and engines: Two modern Trent XWB engines consume less total fuel than the A380’s four engines and create fewer engine-maintenance events.
- Airframe: The A350 makes extensive use of carbon-fibre composites in its fuselage and wings, reducing structural weight and helping resist fatigue and corrosion.
- Demand risk: Selling 300–400 seats is easier than filling an A380. An airline can add frequency with A350s rather than concentrating passengers into one very large departure.
- Airport access: The Code E A350 fits more existing wide-body stands and taxi routes. The A380 normally needs Code F-compatible infrastructure, although some airports use approved modifications and special procedures.
The A380 can spread its costs across many seats when it is full, so four engines do not automatically make its per-seat economics poor. Its problem is the high fuel bill and financial risk for the whole flight when demand is insufficient. Those economics are central to the fleet-planning reasons behind the A380’s 2021 production end.
Airport suitability is not determined by runway length alone. Aircraft weight, temperature, elevation, wind, pavement strength, taxiway clearance and stand geometry all matter. Efficient A380 boarding also benefits from several jet bridges, often serving both decks.
Do the A380 and A350 have the same range and speed?
They cruise at about the same speed, but most A350 standards match or exceed the A380’s advertised range.
Both normally cruise near Mach 0.85, so four engines do not make the A380 appreciably faster on an airline schedule. Routing, winds and air-traffic restrictions usually create a larger block-time difference than aircraft type.
The A350-900ULR can operate exceptionally long sectors, but its range must not be assigned to every A350-900. Extra fuel capability, payload trade-offs and the operator’s chosen weight standard are part of that specialised mission. Published maximum range also assumes particular payload and reserve conditions; it is not the distance every aircraft can cover with a full cabin and cargo hold.
Which is better for passengers?
Neither aircraft guarantees a better flight because the airline’s seat, pitch, cabin density and service matter more than the airframe badge.
The A380 offers a notably quiet cabin, wide public spaces and the novelty of two decks. Economy seating is commonly 3-4-3 on the main deck and 2-4-2 upstairs. Bars, lounges and showers are airline-installed products, not standard features found on every A380.
The A350 usually has a 3-3-3 economy layout, large windows, modern pressurisation and a quiet cabin. Its smaller capacity can also support more frequent departures or direct routes which would not fill an A380. Check the airline’s actual seat map rather than assuming every A380 is spacious or every A350 seat is identical.
The A350 is not a direct A380 replacement
Airlines use the A350 to replace many four-engine long-haul missions, but it cannot provide the A380’s capacity in one departure.
- An A380 mission suits an exceptionally busy, slot-constrained route where demand is dependable and both airports have compatible infrastructure.
- An A350 mission suits most long-haul routes requiring lower trip costs, useful belly cargo capacity, greater frequency and access to more airports.
For an airline, the A350 is usually the flexible choice; the A380 is the specialist high-capacity choice. For a passenger, schedule, fare and the operator’s cabin configuration are better decision criteria than aircraft size alone.
