The “Airbus Beluga Guppy” is not an official aircraft name. It usually conflates the Aero Spacelines Super Guppy—an enlarged Boeing 377/C-97-derived transporter used by Airbus—with its A300-derived successor, the Airbus A300-600ST Beluga. Both were important because they moved enormous aircraft sections quickly between Airbus’s dispersed European factories.
In Aviation & Real-World Flying, the crucial distinction is that the Super Guppy and Beluga are separate aircraft. Their similar swollen profiles reflect the same specialised job, but the Beluga was not simply a renamed or updated Guppy.
Is the Super Guppy the same as the Airbus Beluga?
No. The Super Guppy came from a family of outsized transports developed by Aero Spacelines, originally to move space-programme hardware. Airbus later operated turbine-powered Super Guppies for its own manufacturing work.
The Beluga was Airbus’s replacement, officially designated A300-600ST, with ST meaning Super Transporter. It used the wings, engines, lower fuselage and systems of the A300-600 beneath a specially enlarged upper cargo compartment.

Why was the Super Guppy important to Airbus?
The Super Guppy made Airbus’s distributed production system far more practical. Major structures were manufactured at different plants in France, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom, then brought together for final assembly.
Wings, fuselage barrels and tail sections are awkward rather than exceptionally dense. Moving them by road or sea requires special routes, handling equipment and lengthy schedules; the Guppy turned many such journeys into flights measured in hours.
That speed helped Airbus maintain a predictable production flow for the A300 and later programmes. The aircraft was therefore more than an unusual freighter: it supported the pan-European manufacturing model on which Airbus was built.
What did the Airbus Beluga improve?
The A300-600ST Beluga gave Airbus a faster, more capable and supportable successor based on one of its own aircraft families. Its large upper cargo door opened above the flight deck, while the bulbous cargo hold accepted loads that would not fit through a conventional freighter door.
It also removed Airbus’s dependence on ageing Guppy airframes and established a dedicated in-house transport family. What did the Guppy and Beluga carry?
They principally transported large but relatively light aerostructures between Airbus production sites, including:
- fuselage sections and completed fuselage barrels;
- wings and wing assemblies;
- horizontal and vertical tail surfaces;
- production tooling and other outsized programme equipment.
They were not designed primarily to carry the heaviest possible freight, nor did they routinely transport complete assembled airliners. Their value comes from usable internal dimensions: a part can be too bulky for an ordinary cargo aircraft even when it remains well below that aircraft’s payload limit.

- “Beluga and BelugaXL are identical”: the original Beluga is A300-derived; the larger BelugaXL belongs to the A330 lineage.
- “The largest-looking freighter carries the most weight”: the swollen body prioritises volume. Dense freight may be better suited to a less bulbous heavy-lift aircraft.
