The Airbus Beluga is a twin-engine outsized freighter built to move large aircraft sections between Airbus factories. The A380 is a four-engine, full-length double-deck passenger airliner. Despite the Beluga’s whale-like fuselage, the A380 is longer, taller, heavier and has a much greater wingspan.
What does “Airbus Beluga” mean?
In real-world aviation, the name covers two related outsized transports, not a version of the A380. Their enlarged upper fuselages resemble the forehead of a beluga whale and provide the volume needed for wings, fuselage sections and other loads that will not fit through an ordinary freighter door.

The A380 has two passenger decks running almost the full fuselage length, plus lower-deck holds for baggage and standard air-freight containers. The Beluga instead has one exceptionally large main cargo compartment and a freight door positioned above the cockpit, allowing long components to be loaded from the front.
Which is bigger, the Airbus Beluga or A380?
The A380 is larger than even the BelugaXL in overall dimensions and maximum take-off mass. Its wingspan is nearly 20 metres greater, it is roughly 10 metres longer and it weighs more than twice as much at maximum take-off mass.

A common comparison error is mixing figures for the two Beluga variants. The smaller BelugaST is approximately 56.2 metres long with a 44.8-metre wingspan, while the BelugaXL is substantially larger.
Can an Airbus Beluga carry an A380?
No Airbus Beluga can carry a complete A380. The finished airliner is far beyond the Beluga’s dimensional and weight limits, and many of the A380 programme’s largest structural assemblies also required transport by ship, barge and road convoy.
Belugas carry selected components rather than complete airliners. Their strength is accommodating awkward but relatively light loads, such as wings and fuselage sections; dense cargo can reach the aircraft’s weight limit before filling the hold.
Why cannot an A380 perform the Beluga’s job?
The A380 lacks the unobstructed cargo bay and enormous front door required for outsized aircraft parts. Its passenger decks, floors, frames, stairways and systems divide the fuselage into spaces that cannot accept a complete wing or large fuselage barrel.
An A380 freighter was proposed but never produced, and it would still have been intended principally for conventional palletised or containerised freight. Turning the A380 into a Beluga-style transporter would require a new upper fuselage, loading system and major structural changes; its four engines and much higher operating weight would also be poorly matched to routine factory shuttle flights.
