What is the Airbus BelugaXL? Learn which oversized aircraft parts it carries, how it is loaded and how it differs from the original Beluga.
The Airbus BelugaXL is an outsized cargo aircraft based on the A330-200 Freighter and built to move large Airbus aerostructures between European production and final-assembly sites. It carries aircraft parts such as complete wings, fuselage sections, tailplanes and other bulky components—cargo that is awkward because of its size, not simply its weight.
What aircraft is the BelugaXL based on?
The BelugaXL is officially designated the A330-743L and uses the A330 platform beneath its enlarged upper fuselage. Airbus added the distinctive whale-shaped cargo compartment, an upward-opening cargo door and modified tail surfaces while retaining many established A330 systems and structures.
In real-world aviation, it is best understood as part of Airbus’s industrial transport network rather than a passenger airliner or conventional package freighter. It occupies a specialised place alongside the company’s passenger, freighter and military aircraft families.
What does the Airbus BelugaXL carry?
The BelugaXL primarily carries large but relatively light aircraft assemblies that cannot fit inside an ordinary freighter. Typical loads include:
- A350 wings: the hold can accommodate two A350 wings at once, compared with one in the earlier BelugaST.
- Fuselage sections: completed barrels, shells and other major structures moved between Airbus factories.
- Tail assemblies: horizontal tailplanes, vertical-tail structures and associated components.
- Production equipment: unusually large tooling or fixtures required at another Airbus site.
Its maximum payload is approximately 51 tonnes, while the cargo hold provides roughly 2,200 cubic metres of volume. That combination explains the aircraft’s purpose: it is exceptionally roomy, but it is not among the world’s heaviest lifters. The BelugaXL does not routinely transport passengers, airline baggage or standard containerised freight. Nor does it carry completed A320s or A350s; it moves the large sections from which those aircraft are assembled.
How is cargo loaded into a BelugaXL?
Cargo enters through the large door above the flight deck, allowing the cockpit to remain below the loading opening. Dedicated loading platforms raise each component to main-deck height, where it is transferred into the hold on purpose-made supports and secured for flight.
An ordinary airport container loader is not sufficient. The loading site needs compatible equipment, suitable clearances and fixtures designed for the component. Engineers must also check weight distribution and centre-of-gravity limits: fitting through the door does not automatically make a load safe to fly.
How does the BelugaXL differ from the original Beluga?
The BelugaXL and original Beluga share the same basic job, but they are different aircraft built from different Airbus platforms.

A mistake we see often is calling every whale-shaped Airbus transporter a BelugaXL. The A300-600ST Beluga represented in Microsoft Flight Simulator, for example, is the earlier BelugaST rather than the larger A330-based BelugaXL.
Is the BelugaXL a normal commercial freighter?
No. Airbus built the BelugaXL fleet chiefly to support its own production system, moving components quickly between factories and assembly lines. Its unusual hold could accommodate other outsized loads in principle, but each mission depends on compatible loading equipment, cargo supports, route clearances and engineering approval; it is not a scheduled general-freight aircraft.
