These are approximate planning figures, not guaranteed seat counts for every aircraft. The published maximum assumes a suitable high-density cabin, door and emergency-exit arrangement, crew complement and regulatory approval. The unusually high A330 maxima, for example, are far above the layouts most passengers encounter.

Why can the same Airbus model have different seat counts?
Two aircraft of the same model can have very different capacities because each airline specifies its own cabin and may operate several configurations within one fleet.
- Cabin classes: Business-class suites and premium-economy seats occupy more floor area than standard economy rows.
- Seat pitch and layout: Tighter row spacing and, where certified, a different number of seats across increase capacity.
- Cabin facilities: Galleys, lavatories, wardrobes, accessible spaces and crew-rest provisions displace seats.
- Exit limits: The approved number and arrangement of emergency exits place a firm ceiling on occupancy.
- Mission: Long-range configurations usually sacrifice seats for premium cabins and additional service facilities.
A mistake we see constantly is treating “A320” as both one aircraft and the entire A320 family. An A320neo may be approved for up to 194 passengers, while the stretched A321neo can reach 244. Which Airbus carries the most and fewest passengers?
The A380-800 has the highest Airbus passenger capacity, while the A220-100 is the smallest standard passenger model in the modern range.
The A380’s 853-seat figure is a maximum-density, all-economy certification limit, not a normal airline layout. Dedicated freighters and specialised transports should not be included in that comparison. The BelugaXL’s cargo role and unusual payload, for example, do not give it a conventional passenger capacity. Airbus Corporate Jet cabins may carry only a small number of occupants despite using an airliner-sized fuselage.
Which capacity figure should you use?
Use the airline’s exact configuration for a real flight, typical seating for broad comparisons, and the approved maximum only for certification or high-density planning.
- For a booked flight: Check the airline’s seat map and exact variant, while allowing for a last-minute aircraft substitution.
- For comparing aircraft: Use typical seating, because it reflects the model’s normal market role better than an evacuation-limit maximum.
- For regulatory questions: Use the approved capacity for that precise variant, door arrangement and cabin configuration.
- For simulator payloads: Match the operator and cabin represented by the add-on rather than loading every model to its published maximum. Check whether passenger weights already include baggage so that bags are not counted twice.
