Airbus H145 vs EC145 explained: C-2, D-2 and D-3 naming, Fenestron and rotor differences, and how to identify the correct helicopter.
The EC145 is the older Eurocopter-era BK117 C-2, with a conventional tail rotor, four-blade main rotor and earlier avionics. The H145 is its later Airbus Helicopters development, first designated EC145 T2, adding more powerful engines, a Fenestron tail rotor and newer avionics; later H145 D-3 aircraft also gained five main-rotor blades.
For our Aviation & Real-World Flying coverage, the safest distinction is the certified BK117 model code rather than the badge painted on the fuselage. The shared lineage and the short-lived EC145 T2 name are what cause most of the confusion.
Is the H145 just a renamed EC145?
No: the H145 is the developed D-2/D-3 generation, while the original EC145 is the C-2 generation. The complication is that the D-2 was introduced under the name EC145 T2 before becoming the H145 under Airbus Helicopters branding.
Consequently, EC145 T2 and four-blade H145 can describe substantially the same generation. A bare EC145 designation ordinarily means the older C-2, but paperwork, sales listings and simulator titles are not always that disciplined.

Some D-2 helicopters have been converted to D-3 standard through an approved retrofit. When external clues conflict with an old listing or delivery name, the aircraft's present model records take precedence.
How can you tell an EC145 from an H145?
The tail rotor and main-blade count provide the quickest visual identification.
- Inspect the tail rotor. An exposed conventional tail rotor identifies the normal EC145 C-2 configuration. A ducted Fenestron points to an EC145 T2/H145 D-2 or H145 D-3.
- Count the main-rotor blades. Four blades with a Fenestron indicate the D-2 generation; five blades with a Fenestron indicate the D-3 configuration.
- Check the model designation. C-2, D-2 or D-3 on the data plate and official records is more reliable than an operator livery, manufacturer wordmark or advertisement.
- Examine the flight deck. Helionix displays and controls support identification as an H145-generation aircraft, although avionics modifications and mission equipment mean the cockpit alone is not conclusive.
Do the EC145 and H145 fly differently?
Yes, but the size of the difference depends on which H145 generation and mission fit are being compared. They share the BK117 lineage, high-set tail boom, rear clamshell doors and broadly similar utility-cabin concept, but their systems and performance are not interchangeable.
- Power and transmission: the H145's Arriel 2E installation and revised drivetrain provide better performance margins than the C-2, particularly when weight, altitude and temperature become limiting.
- Anti-torque system: the Fenestron changes pedal response, low-speed handling and external noise characteristics compared with the EC145's conventional tail rotor.
- Avionics: Helionix integrates displays, alerts and automatic-flight-control functions differently from the earlier EC145 installations. Procedures and cockpit workload therefore differ even where both aircraft have glass displays.
- Five-blade rotor: the D-3 configuration raises useful load and reduces vibration compared with the four-blade D-2 arrangement.
Published range, payload and speed figures must be compared using the same fuel reserve, equipment fit, atmospheric conditions and mission profile. An emergency-medical interior, hoist, external stores or military equipment can erase an apparent brochure advantage.
Which helicopter is better?
The H145 is generally the more capable modern platform, while an EC145 C-2 can remain a sensible choice when its performance meets the mission and fleet commonality or acquisition cost matters more than the latest systems.
The H145 is the stronger choice for operators needing newer avionics, improved performance margins or the D-3's five-blade payload benefits. An operator evaluating a used EC145 must instead weigh airframe hours, engine condition, component life, maintenance support and installed mission equipment; the model name by itself says little about those costs.

What does this mean in flight simulation?
A simulator add-on should use the name of the airframe and systems configuration it actually represents. A common mistake is to treat EC145 and H145 packages as the same helicopter with different liveries.
The legacy EC145 REGA rescue model for FSX, for example, represents the recognisable C-2-era configuration with four main blades and a conventional tail rotor. It should not be judged as though it modelled a modern five-blade H145.
For any simulator package, inspect the external rotor geometry, cockpit and documentation before selecting procedures or performance data. An H145 D-2 checklist is not automatically correct for a C-2, while a package labelled only H145 may represent either the four-blade D-2 or five-blade D-3.
