ATIS vs AWIS: what is the difference?

ATIS (Automatic Terminal Information Service) is an airport’s repeated operational briefing, combining weather with the runway in use, approaches and essential notices. AWIS, usually Automatic Weather Information Service, is mainly an automated weather observation. In aviation and real-world flying, ATIS gives the terminal picture; AWIS gives weather data.

The practical difference between ATIS and AWIS is the scope of information provided.

These are typical distinctions rather than universal specifications. AWIS terminology and content vary between countries, authorities and individual systems, so the published aerodrome information remains decisive.

What does ATIS include that AWIS usually does not?

ATIS adds the operational information a pilot needs before contacting the controller, rather than merely reading out weather sensors.

  • The runway or runways in use
  • The expected instrument approach or departure information
  • Runway condition, braking or aerodrome remarks when applicable
  • Short operational instructions and significant local information
  • A phonetic identifier that confirms which edition the pilot received

A pilot might report Information Bravo on first contact. That tells ATC the pilot has copied that specific ATIS edition, although ATIS itself is information rather than a clearance.

ATIS is also more than a spoken METAR. AWIS normally reports the conditions measured at or near the aerodrome. A common mistake is to treat its wind report as a runway assignment. At a controlled airport, ATC provides the runway; at an uncontrolled aerodrome, pilots follow the published procedures and coordinate with other traffic.

Does AWIS always mean Automatic Weather Information Service?

No. AWIS most often means Automatic Weather Information Service, but the expansion and function are not standardised worldwide.

Some software and airport systems use AWIS to mean Aviation Weather Information System. That can describe a broader weather platform collecting METARs, TAFs, radar imagery or pilot reports rather than a radio broadcast at one airport. For example, this FS2004 weather-information utility using the AWIS name is not an ATIS service.

Read the frequency label, chart entry or software description instead of relying on the acronym alone. If it lists only observed weather, it should not be treated as a substitute for terminal operational information.

Is AWIS the same as AWOS or ASOS?

Not necessarily: AWOS and ASOS usually name defined automated observing systems, while AWIS may describe the service that distributes weather or a broader information platform.

Which service should pilots use?

Use ATIS when the airport publishes it, and use AWIS for weather when that is the available service; one is not automatically a replacement for the other.

  1. Identify the published service. Check whether the listed frequency is ATIS, AWIS or another weather broadcast.
  2. Copy the time and weather. Pay particular attention to wind, visibility, cloud and QNH or altimeter setting.
  3. Separate weather from operations. Do not infer the assigned runway or approach from AWIS unless the published service explicitly provides that information.
  4. Acknowledge correctly. Give ATC the ATIS identifier when one was broadcast. Do not invent an Alpha or Bravo identifier for an AWIS message that did not provide one.
  5. Resolve stale or conflicting information. If the broadcast differs materially from the observed conditions or controller instructions, ask ATC rather than guessing.

Flight simulators do not always model these services consistently. An airport may offer only ATIS, while an add-on labelled AWIS may be a weather viewer rather than a tuned airport broadcast. The safest interpretation is the real-world one: ATIS combines weather and operations; AWIS is weather-focused unless its documentation explicitly says otherwise.
