ATIS vs AWIS: what is the difference?

ATIS (Automatic Terminal Information Service) is a repeated airport briefing that combines weather with runway, approach and other operational information. AWIS is a weather-focused aerodrome service or system whose exact name varies by country. In aviation, ATIS supplies the terminal operating picture; AWIS primarily supplies observed weather.

What does ATIS stand for, and what is AWIS?

In operational aviation, ATIS means Automatic Terminal Information Service; AWIS has no single expansion or specification used worldwide.

These are typical distinctions, not a worldwide AWIS standard. Published aerodrome information always overrides assumptions based on the acronym.

What does ATIS include that AWIS usually does not?

ATIS adds the operational details needed before a pilot contacts the controller.

  • The landing and departing runway or runways in use
  • The expected instrument approach or relevant visual approach information
  • Runway condition or braking information when applicable
  • Selected closures, hazards and short operational instructions
  • A phonetic information identifier showing which edition was received

A report such as Information Bravo tells ATC that the pilot copied that ATIS edition. It is not a take-off, landing or approach clearance, and a later controller instruction takes precedence.

ATIS does not replace charts, pre-flight briefing material or NOTAMs. Only selected information suitable for a short repeated broadcast is included.

What information does AWIS provide?

AWIS normally reports the weather measured at or near the aerodrome without providing the wider terminal briefing found on ATIS.

Depending on the sensors and local specification, this can include wind direction and speed, gusts, visibility, present weather, cloud base, temperature, dew point and QNH or altimeter setting. Not every installation measures every element. If a value is missing or marked unavailable, do not assume conditions are favourable.

An AWIS observation can also differ from a METAR because the products may use different observation times, averaging periods or quality-control processes. Copy the stated time and units rather than assuming the newest-sounding broadcast is the most relevant one.

A common mistake is to treat the AWIS wind as a runway assignment. At a controlled airport, ATC assigns or clears the runway. At an uncontrolled aerodrome, pilots use the published procedures, actual conditions and traffic situation; the strongest headwind alone does not determine the correct runway.

AWOS vs ATIS: where does AWIS fit?

AWOS and AWIS are on the weather side of the comparison, while ATIS combines weather with operational airport information.

AWOS usually means Automated Weather Observing System, and ASOS usually means Automated Surface Observing System. These terms generally describe automated observing equipment or networks. AWIS may instead describe the service distributing observations produced by an automatic weather station, although local terminology overlaps.

Which service should pilots and simmers use?

Use ATIS when it is published for the airport’s terminal briefing; use AWIS when you need the weather service published for that aerodrome.

  1. Identify the service. Check the chart, aerodrome information or simulator airport data to see whether the frequency is labelled ATIS, AWIS, AWOS or something else.
  2. Copy the weather carefully. Record the observation time, wind, visibility, cloud and QNH or altimeter setting, including the stated units.
  3. Use the ATIS identifier. On first contact, report Information Alpha, Bravo or the code actually transmitted. An AWIS message without a code does not need an invented one.
  4. Separate information from clearance. ATIS can report a runway in use, but the controller issues the clearance. AWIS wind data does neither.
  5. Resolve conflicts instead of guessing. At a controlled airport, query ATC if a broadcast materially conflicts with an instruction or observed conditions. At an uncontrolled field, follow the published procedure and coordinate with traffic.

If both services are available, ATIS remains the source for the terminal operating picture. AWIS may provide an additional weather check, but compare the observation times before deciding that one report is newer.

Why can simulator ATIS and AWIS disagree?

Simulator broadcasts can disagree when the weather engine, scenery data and ATC runway-selection logic obtain their information from different sources or update at different times.

A mistake we see repeatedly is assuming that an ATIS announcing runway 27 must be broken because the latest wind appears to favour runway 09. Real and simulated runway selection can also reflect local procedures, closures, traffic flow and a weather change that has not yet triggered a new broadcast.

  • Confirm that the tuned frequency belongs to the intended airport, especially where aerodromes are close together.
  • Compare the observation time rather than only the wind value.
  • Check whether an external weather source is feeding the simulator but not its built-in ATC or information service.
  • Follow the active controller or ATC system for the operational runway; do not derive a clearance from an automated weather report.
  • Treat an add-on labelled AWIS as a weather viewer unless its documentation explicitly says it creates a tuned airport broadcast.

Why do searches compare ATIS with PointSharePlus, CloudCompare or Leica Cyclone?

Those searches use ATIS as a point-cloud software name, not as the aviation acronym Automatic Terminal Information Service.

Queries such as ATIS vs PointSharePlus 2026, ATIS vs CloudCompare 2026 and ATIS vs Leica Cyclone 2026 concern 3D point-cloud or surveying workflows. In that context, ATIS generally refers to ATIS.cloud; it has no operational connection to an airport ATIS broadcast. The year is a software-comparison modifier, not an aviation ATIS version.
