Learn how to centre the G1000 CDI, set an intercept heading and capture a GPS approach correctly in FSX and FSX: Steam Edition.
In FSX’s G1000, do not try to make the aircraft heading match the GPS course. Select the magenta GPS CDI, activate the correct approach leg, then intercept it at a shallow angle. Centre the CDI by tracking the leg; use the heading bug only to command or reference your intercept heading.

What should align on the G1000 display?
Only the CDI needle should centre over the active GPS course; the aircraft heading and heading bug do not have to point in the same direction.

Do not turn the course knob merely to make its value match the heading bug. In normal GPS sequencing, the active leg supplies the course automatically. Manual course selection becomes relevant in OBS mode and for some radio-navigation indications. How do I intercept and centre the GPS CDI?
Use a shallow converging heading, confirm that the intended leg is active, and let the CDI move towards the centre before turning onto the course.
- Load the approach. Use the G1000 procedure controls to select the correct airport, approach and transition. Loading an approach inserts it into the flight plan but does not necessarily make the required leg active.
- Confirm the active leg. The magenta flight-plan line must represent the segment you intend to intercept. If it points behind the aircraft or back towards an unwanted initial fix, activate the appropriate approach leg before continuing.
- Select GPS as the CDI source. Use the PFD’s CDI source control until the source is labelled GPS and shown in magenta. A green NAV or VLOC indication means the display is using a radio receiver instead.
- Check OBS or SUSP. Cancel an accidentally selected OBS mode so the GPS can sequence through the approach. SUSP at the missed-approach point is normal; handle it according to the missed-approach procedure rather than cancelling it early.
- Choose an intercept heading. Set the heading bug roughly 20–30 degrees towards the active course. If the CDI is displaced left, establish a sensible left intercept; if it is right, intercept to the right. Avoid chasing a full-scale needle with a sharp turn.
- Capture the course. When using the autopilot, establish the intercept in HDG mode and arm NAV while converging on the leg. Check the mode annunciation: NAV should capture as the CDI approaches the centre. Once captured, the autopilot follows the GPS course and the old heading-bug position no longer commands the lateral path.
- Track and descend separately. Make small heading corrections if hand-flying. Do not assume a centred lateral CDI provides vertical guidance; the stock FSX G1000 is not a complete modern WAAS simulation, so control descent using the procedure altitudes unless the installed aircraft clearly supplies a valid glidepath.

Why will the CDI or NAV mode not capture?
A non-capturing CDI usually means the wrong navigation source or flight-plan leg is selected, not that the heading bug needs to match the course.
- The CDI is green: switch the source from NAV1 or NAV2 to GPS so the indication becomes magenta.
- The GPS has no active leg: loading an approach alone may leave the previous flight-plan segment active. Activate the cleared leg and confirm the magenta line.
- The aircraft is parallel to the course: NAV mode needs a converging intercept. Use HDG mode to create a shallow intercept first.
- OBS is selected: this suspends normal leg sequencing and can leave the displayed course under manual control.
- The autopilot remains in HDG: pressing NAV may arm rather than immediately activate it. Read the PFD mode annunciation instead of relying only on the button light.
- The procedure does not match your chart: FSX’s stock navigation database is dated. Verify the fixes and procedure stored in the simulator rather than assuming they match newer real-world data.

Why does the heading differ after the CDI centres?
A centred CDI does not require heading and course to be identical. The GPS course describes the desired path over the ground, while heading describes where the nose points. In a crosswind, the aircraft must point into the wind to remain on that path.
The heading bug may also remain at the intercept heading after NAV captures. That is normal: in NAV mode the active GPS leg commands the lateral autopilot, not the heading bug. Reset the bug to the present heading only if you want it as a reference or expect to return to HDG mode.
Should I switch from GPS to VLOC on final?
For an RNAV or GPS approach, keep the CDI source on GPS throughout the lateral approach. Switch to NAV1 or VLOC only when flying an ILS, localiser or VOR procedure that uses a radio-navigation signal. A green VLOC needle cannot track a GPS approach leg, even if the runway and final course appear correct.
