The safest source is the simulator’s official project page or the release location linked directly from it.
- Find the official project page. Search results can place adverts and unofficial mirrors above the genuine source. Follow only the download or release link provided by the project itself.
- Select the correct operating system. A Windows installer will not work on macOS or Linux, and desktop projects should not be downloaded as unofficial mobile packages unless the developer explicitly supports that platform.
- Read what the package contains. Look for wording such as complete game, simulator engine, route, scenario, rolling stock or demo before downloading.
- Keep security protection enabled. If an installer produces a warning, confirm its source and compare any checksum or signature published by the project. Do not disable protection simply to force an unknown file to run.
