Fix blurry flight simulator text by correcting resolution, render scale, anti-aliasing, texture filtering, Windows DPI and VR settings.
To fix blurry or fuzzy text in a flight simulator, run the display at its native resolution and start with a 100% render scale. Disable aggressive upscaling, select high-quality anti-aliasing, raise cockpit texture quality and anisotropic filtering, then check Windows DPI scaling or the headset render resolution if the problem affects only menus or VR.
The setting names differ across Microsoft Flight Simulator, X-Plane, Prepar3D and FSX, but the diagnostic process is the same: identify which type of text is blurred before changing settings.
What kind of flight simulator text is blurry?
Where the blur appears identifies the likely cause and prevents unnecessary graphics changes.

How do I make cockpit text sharp again?
Start from a known native-resolution baseline, then add performance-saving features one at a time.
- Use the display's native resolution. Set Windows and the simulator to the monitor's recommended resolution. Borderless-window modes usually inherit the desktop resolution, while exclusive full-screen modes may have their own setting. A 4K panel running at 1080p will soften small labels even when every texture option is high. - Set render scaling to 100%. Turn off dynamic resolution temporarily and establish whether native internal rendering fixes the text. A simulator outputting at native resolution can still look fuzzy if it renders internally below 100% and enlarges the result.
- Test anti-aliasing without aggressive upscaling. In modern simulators, native-resolution TAA often stabilises fine lettering well, although it can benefit from modest sharpening. If DLSS, FSR or XeSS is available, begin with its Quality mode; Balanced, Performance and Ultra Performance modes sacrifice the small detail used by cockpit glyphs. At 1080p, even Quality mode can be visibly softer. Older simulators may preserve panel lettering better with MSAA than with post-process FXAA.
- Raise cockpit texture quality and filtering. Select a high texture-resolution option and use 8x or 16x anisotropic filtering where available. Filtering matters most when reading labels on the centre pedestal, overhead panel or any surface viewed at a shallow angle. Do not exceed available video memory indiscriminately, because texture swapping can introduce pauses or delayed loading.
- Add only modest sharpening. Sharpening can restore edge definition lost to temporal anti-aliasing, but too much creates bright outlines and shimmering. Keep monitor or television sharpness near its neutral setting while adjusting the simulator. - Check blur while moving separately. If static labels are clear but become smeared during head movement, disable motion blur, frame generation and temporal upscaling one at a time. That symptom is a motion artefact, not a low-resolution cockpit texture.
Why are menus fuzzy when the cockpit is sharp?
Fuzzy menus with a sharp 3D cockpit usually indicate operating-system scaling rather than a simulator rendering fault.
Use the recommended Windows display scale first and remove unusual custom scaling values. For legacy applications such as FSX or older Prepar3D components, open the simulator executable's properties, find the compatibility DPI controls and test an override performed by the application. This may make text smaller but sharper; revert it if menus become clipped or unreadable.
DPI compatibility settings affect programme windows and interface elements. They do not normally repair blurred 3D cockpit labels, so avoid cycling through DPI overrides when the entire rendered scene is soft.
Why is the text blurry in only one aircraft?
If other aircraft are sharp, the affected aircraft, livery or panel package is the most likely cause.
- Load a default aircraft at the same airport and camera position. Clear text there rules out the monitor and most global settings.
- Disable liveries, cockpit replacements and other modifications that alter panel textures.
- Check whether the aircraft offers a cockpit-display or panel-resolution option. Raising an instrument refresh-rate setting changes motion smoothness, not the sharpness of static lettering.
- Return a popped-out instrument to its intended window size. Enlarging a low-resolution panel window exposes its source pixels.
- Verify or reinstall the aircraft package if its textures may be incomplete or corrupted.
Some labels are baked into low-resolution source textures. If that is the case, global supersampling may improve them slightly, but it cannot recreate missing lettering detail.
Why is flight simulator text blurry in VR?
VR cockpit text depends on optical alignment and per-eye render resolution, not the desktop mirror resolution.
Position the headset so both eyes sit in the lens sweet spot, set the correct interpupillary distance where the headset supports it, and clean the lenses appropriately. Then put the headset runtime resolution and the simulator's VR render scale near their normal baseline values. Avoid lowering both, because the reductions combine and can make gauges unreadable.
Use Quality rather than Performance upscaling when the GPU allows it. Fixed foveated rendering intentionally reduces peripheral detail, while incorrectly configured eye-tracked foveated rendering can leave the area being viewed soft. Raising desktop resolution does not normally increase headset clarity. How can I tell if the monitor or television is causing it?
A screenshot separates rendering blur from most display-scaling problems.
Capture the cockpit and inspect the image at 100% on another display. If the screenshot is also fuzzy, the cause is inside the simulator or graphics pipeline. If it is sharp, check the monitor's scaling mode, television PC mode, overscan, noise reduction and signal format. Reduced chroma resolution can make coloured interface text look soft even when the 3D image appears acceptable.
VR is the exception: a sharp desktop mirror can accompany a blurred headset view because the mirror does not reproduce lens alignment, per-eye resolution or the headset's optical sweet spot.
