Find free DCS World campaigns, check aircraft and map requirements, install .cmp and .miz files correctly, and fix campaigns that do not appear.
Free DCS World campaigns come with some modules and are also shared through the simulator publisher’s official user-files library and established community projects. Download the package, extract it, then place its campaign folder—normally containing a .cmp file and several .miz missions—under your DCS Saved Games campaigns folder.
Where can you find free DCS World campaigns?
The safest starting points are the campaigns supplied with installed aircraft and the publisher’s official user-files library, where community uploads can be filtered by aircraft, map and content type.
- Included campaigns: Some aircraft modules install one or more campaigns automatically. They should appear on DCS World’s Campaign screen without any manual file copying.
- Community campaigns: Search the official user-files library for campaigns matching your aircraft and terrain. Read the description and installation notes before downloading.

A campaign being free does not mean all its prerequisites are free. It may require a paid aircraft, terrain, asset pack or community aircraft mod. Our breakdown of included, paid and community-made DCS campaigns covers those distinctions.
What should you check before downloading?
A free campaign will only run properly when its aircraft, map and other dependencies are installed.
- The required player aircraft, including the correct variant.
- The specified terrain; campaign missions cannot be moved to another map simply by copying them.
- Any required asset pack, AI units or aircraft mod.
- The supported DCS edition or branch if the package documentation names one.
- Whether the download is a genuine campaign or merely a collection of standalone missions.

How do you install a downloaded DCS campaign?
Install ordinary community campaigns in the DCS Saved Games directory, not the simulator’s main installation folder.

- Read the supplied instructions. Check the aircraft, terrain and optional mod requirements before moving any files.
- Extract the archive. DCS cannot load a campaign left inside its compressed download. Keep all mission, image, audio and descriptor files together.
- Identify the package type. A normal campaign has a
.cmpdescriptor and associated.mizmission files. A lone.mizbelongs in the regular Missions folder instead. - Open the active Saved Games folder. The usual destination is
%USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\DCS\Missions\Campaigns\en\Campaign Name\. Older or retained installations may useDCS.openbetainstead ofDCS. - Copy the complete campaign folder. The
.cmpfile and its referenced missions should remain together. Do not rename individual.mizfiles because the campaign descriptor may call them by exact filename. - Restart DCS World. Open the Campaign screen and look for the installed user campaign. The precise category wording can differ between interface versions.
Only write into the main DCS installation directory when the campaign’s own documentation explicitly requires it. Files there can be removed by repairs or updates, while the Saved Games directory is intended for user content.
Why does the campaign not appear in DCS World?
A missing campaign is usually in the wrong folder, still compressed or not actually packaged as a campaign.
- Wrong DCS profile folder: Check whether your active directory is named
DCSorDCS.openbeta. - Extra nested folder: Make sure the archive has not produced duplicate levels such as
Campaign Name\Campaign Name\. Keep the.cmpfile directly inside the intended campaign folder. - No campaign descriptor: Files containing only
.mizmissions will not appear as a conventional campaign. A worked example of installing a community .miz mission shows how that content should be handled. - Missing language directory: Many English-language packages belong beneath
Campaigns\en\. Preserve another language folder if the download supplies one. - Missing dependency: A campaign may appear but refuse to launch when its terrain, aircraft or required mod is unavailable.
- Damaged or outdated package: Re-extract a clean copy and check its documentation for compatibility notes. Older missions can also fail when they depend on removed units or scripts.
Can you update a campaign without losing progress?
Campaign progress is generally stored in the DCS user profile rather than inside the downloaded mission archive, but a major campaign revision can change mission names or sequence data.
Back up the relevant campaign folder and your active Saved Games\DCS directory before replacing files. Keep the same folder and filenames unless the author’s instructions say otherwise; if the update substantially restructures the campaign, starting a new play-through may be necessary.
