Install DCS World modules on standalone or Steam, with clear steps for Module Manager, DLC licences, missing modules and storage.
To install official DCS World modules, use Module Manager in the standalone edition or Steam's DLC controls in the Steam edition. Sign into the account that owns the licence, select the aircraft, map, campaign or asset pack, start the download, and restart DCS if prompted. Never copy official modules into Saved Games.
Official modules and community-made mods use different installation methods. If you have not installed the base simulator yet, our standalone-versus-Steam setup guide explains which edition to choose.
How do I install modules in DCS World standalone?
Standalone modules are installed through DCS Module Manager, which hands the download to the official DCS updater.
- Update DCS World: Allow the launcher or updater to bring the core simulator up to date before adding the module.
- Sign into the owning account: Use the same DCS account under which the module was purchased or registered.
- Open Module Manager: Depending on the interface version, this is available from the launcher or the module icon on the main DCS screen. DCS may instead display an automatic prompt when it detects a newly licensed product.
- Select the module: Find it among the available but uninstalled products, choose Install, and approve any restart requested by DCS.
- Let the updater finish: Keep enough free space for both the download and temporary installation files. Maps generally need much more room than individual aircraft.
- Launch and verify: Open Instant Action, Training or the Mission Editor and check that the aircraft or terrain is available.
Choosing not to install a module when DCS first offers it does not remove the licence; it can be installed later from Module Manager. Terrain-specific requirements and installation details are covered in our guide to DCS maps and their installation.
How do I install DCS modules through Steam?
Steam-edition modules are managed as Steam DLC rather than installed through the standalone Module Manager.
- Open the Steam Library and select DCS World Steam Edition.
- Open Properties and find the DLC list; some Steam client layouts label this option Manage DLC.
- Enable the module by selecting its Install checkbox.
- Check Downloads and wait until Steam has completed the installation.
- Start the Steam edition of DCS and verify the module in an appropriate mission or Instant Action scenario.
Do not assume licences work both ways. Eligible modules bought through Steam can usually be bound to a DCS account for use with standalone, after which they must be downloaded through Module Manager. Standalone purchases cannot be activated in the Steam edition, and copying module folders between the two installations does not transfer the licence.
Where are DCS World modules installed?
Official modules are kept inside the main DCS World installation and cannot normally be assigned to separate drives one by one. Aircraft and terrain files are typically stored below DCS World\Mods, but these folders are controlled by the updater and should not be edited manually.
If storage is tight, move or reinstall the complete DCS installation using the appropriate method for your edition. Removing one module through Module Manager, or clearing its Steam DLC checkbox, may not recover every byte because DCS retains some shared assets needed for missions and multiplayer.
The profile under %USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\DCS holds controls, preferences, missions and other user data. Community aircraft and scripts may also use Saved Games, but they follow a separate process explained in our DCS community-mod installation instructions.
Why is my DCS module missing or not authorised?
A missing DCS module is usually caused by the wrong account or edition, an incomplete download, disabled DLC, or launching a different DCS installation from the one that was updated.
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Module is absent from Module Manager | The licence belongs to another account or to Steam | Confirm the signed-in account and purchase edition. Bind an eligible Steam licence before attempting a standalone installation. |
| Steam says the DLC is installed, but DCS does not show it | The DLC download is incomplete, disabled, or the standalone edition was launched | Check the Steam DLC checkbox and Downloads page, then launch DCS from the Steam Library. |
| DCS reports an authorisation failure | The licence could not be validated | Connect to the internet, check the owning account and restart DCS. A newly added module cannot be authorised through an unprepared offline session. |
| The module appears, but the aircraft cannot be flown | The mission has no compatible player slot, or the product is not a flyable aircraft | Try the module's Instant Action content or create a Player or Client slot for the exact aircraft. Maps, campaigns and asset packs do not add a flyable cockpit. |
| The download stops or repeats | Insufficient storage or damaged installation files | Free additional space, follow the normal DCS update procedure, and run the built-in repair tool if the problem continues. |
If more than one DCS installation exists on the PC, inspect the shortcut or executable path before downloading the module again. A mistake we see often is updating one copy while repeatedly launching another.
