FSX crashes when selecting a military aircraft? Diagnose broken models, missing gauges and GaugeSound.dll, then repair the add-on safely.
FSX does not crash because an aircraft is military; it crashes because that add-on loads a broken, missing or incompatible model, panel gauge or support DLL. If the crash occurs while highlighting the aircraft, suspect its model or textures. If it occurs after pressing OK, suspect the panel and gauges first.
How do I identify which aircraft component is crashing FSX?
The point at which FSX closes is the best first clue to the faulty component.

A military aircraft that was converted from FS2004 may use an older model or gauge format. Other packages require FSX SP2 or Acceleration-era features. FSX: Steam Edition also has a different installation location, so an old installer may put files into an unused boxed-FSX folder.
How do I fix the military aircraft add-on?
Most single-aircraft crashes can be fixed without reinstalling FSX.
- Back up the aircraft folder. It should be under
SimObjects\Airplanes. Preserve any liveries or configuration changes before replacing files. - Check the package requirements. Confirm that the aircraft was made for FSX rather than copied directly from FS2004 or another simulator. Also check whether it expects SP2, Acceleration or a separately supplied gauge module.
- Reinstall the complete folder structure. The aircraft folder normally contains
aircraft.cfgplus its model, panel, sound and texture folders. A mistake we see constantly is an extra nested directory or only the visible aircraft files being copied while gauges and support modules are ignored. - Install the required gauges exactly as documented. Gauge files generally belong in the FSX
Gaugesfolder, but a helper DLL may belong besidefsx.exe. CAB gauge archives should normally remain intact unless the aircraft instructions explicitly say to extract them. panel.cfg, temporarily use a valid panel alias pointing to a stock FSX aircraft. If the military aircraft then loads, its visual model is probably sound and the fault lies in its original panel, gauges or support DLL. - Test each variation separately. If only one repaint crashes, compare its
model=,panel=,texture=andsound=entries with a working[fltsim.x]section. The suffix must match the corresponding folder name. - Read the Windows crash record. Reliability Monitor or Event Viewer may name the faulting module. A specific gauge or DLL name is useful evidence; generic entries such as Windows system modules usually require component-by-component isolation rather than replacing that system file.
Where should GaugeSound.dll be installed?
GaugeSound.dll should be installed only where the aircraft documentation specifies; many older FSX packages expect it in the main folder containing fsx.exe, not inside the aircraft folder.
This dependency is a known cause with some military freeware. The notes supplied with our FSX T-33A training jet package warn that its required gauge and GaugeSound.dll files must be installed, while the SIAI 208M package instructions identify the same missing DLL as a direct crash cause.
Do not place downloaded DLLs in Windows system directories. Use the version included with the aircraft from a source you trust, back up an existing copy before overwriting it, and approve an FSX module prompt only when you recognise the file. For Steam Edition, verify that an old installer has written to the actual Steam FSX directory rather than a dormant Microsoft Games path.
Should I reinstall FSX if one military aircraft crashes?
Do not reinstall FSX when only one military add-on causes the crash; remove or repair that aircraft first.
If a stock aircraft also fails, restore any modified default panels and gauges, then repair boxed FSX or verify the Steam Edition installation files. File verification can replace altered simulator files, so back up intentional modifications beforehand. When every aircraft crashes, the fault is no longer specific to the military package and should be treated as a general FSX loading problem.
