Why does FSX flash white when I select an add-on aircraft?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Find out why the FSX screen flashes white when selecting an add-on aircraft, when it is harmless, and how to fix textures, DX10 and compatibility.

A brief white flash in FSX or FSX: Steam Edition usually occurs while the simulator redraws the aircraft preview or loads the selected add-on’s model and textures, so it is often harmless. If the white screen persists, repeats, freezes FSX or leaves the aircraft white, the package is misinstalled, incompatible or failing to render.

Is a brief white flash in FSX normal?

A single white flash followed by a normally displayed, flyable aircraft is usually just FSX repainting the screen while it replaces the preview or live model. It is more noticeable when changing to a complex aircraft during a flight, because FSX must unload one model and load another.

How do I diagnose the FSX white flash?

The quickest diagnosis is to compare the affected add-on with a default aircraft and with another repaint of the same model.

  1. Identify what becomes white. A momentary whole-screen flash, a blank preview image and an all-white 3D aircraft are separate symptoms with different fixes.
  2. Select a default FSX aircraft. If default aircraft also produce the same brief flash but load correctly, it is probably a harmless screen redraw. If only one add-on fails, concentrate on that package.
  3. Try another livery of the same aircraft. If one livery fails, its texture folder or texture= reference is probably wrong. If every livery fails, inspect the model and the add-on’s compatibility.
  4. Restart FSX and load the aircraft from Free Flight. If it works after a restart but fails after several aircraft changes, FSX may be running short of address space or retaining resources from a complex aircraft. FSX is a 32-bit application, so repeated model changes can expose this limitation.
  5. Compare full-screen and windowed modes. If every aircraft causes a disruptive full-display flash only in full-screen mode, investigate the display mode, graphics driver and overlays rather than altering the add-on.

What aircraft files should I check?

If only one add-on triggers the white screen, check its installation and configuration before reinstalling FSX. The aircraft should sit directly under SimObjects\Airplanes\<AircraftName>\, with aircraft.cfg, its AIR file and the model, panel, sound and texture folders inside that aircraft directory.

In each [fltsim.x] entry, sim= must match the AIR filename without its extension. A blank model= uses the model folder, while model=xxx requires model.xxx. The same rule applies to texture= and folders named texture.xxx.

Do not remove a supplied texture.cfg; it may provide fallback textures shared by every livery. Our guide to the correct FSX aircraft folder layout and installation checks covers the package structure without duplicating files unnecessarily.

Why is only the aircraft preview white?

A white or blank preview usually means the selected repaint lacks a readable thumbnail.jpg in its texture folder. Replacing that image fixes the chooser preview, but it will not repair a white aircraft model in the simulator.

With FSX: Steam Edition, also confirm that an automatic installer did not place the files in an unused boxed-FSX directory. Older packages vary, so check Steam Edition compatibility and installation-path requirements before moving individual files.

Can DirectX 10 Preview cause the white flash?

Yes, DirectX 10 Preview can expose material and texture problems in older aircraft, although one brief flash is not proof of a DX10 fault. Temporarily disable Preview DirectX 10 in FSX’s graphics settings, restart the simulator and test the same aircraft again.

If the model works in the standard rendering mode, use that mode or replace the add-on with an aircraft built properly for FSX. An aircraft advertised only for FS2004 is not guaranteed to render correctly in FSX. If the model remains white after loading, follow our targeted checks for persistent all-white FSX aircraft textures.

When is the white screen actually a freeze?

A white screen that does not clear and leaves the FSX interface unresponsive is a hang, not a normal loading flash. The point at which it occurs helps identify the component: failure while highlighting the aircraft suggests its preview or model, while failure after starting the flight can also involve gauges, sounds and supporting modules.

Test from a fresh default flight with no previous complex aircraft loaded. If the problem remains, reinstall that add-on from a clean package rather than combining files from different releases; our troubleshooting for add-on-specific FSX hangs and freezes covers the next isolation steps.
