How do you plan a KJFK to MKJP flight route in a simulator?

KJFK is New York John F. Kennedy International, while MKJP is Norman Manley International at Kingston. Do not confuse it with MKJS, Sangster International at Montego Bay. The direct distance is approximately 1,370 NM, with the planned route normally somewhat longer.

KJFK to MKJP flight-planning workflow

The safest workflow is to construct and validate the en-route portion before committing to runway-dependent procedures.

  1. Choose the exact aircraft profile. Match the engine variant, weight units, payload and cruise schedule. A generic 737 profile can produce misleading fuel figures when the add-on models a different variant.
  2. Check the forecast conditions. Review winds, convective weather, runway availability and likely alternates for the planned flight period. Tropical thunderstorms can make a direct-looking route impractical.

  5. Plan fuel and an alternate. Include taxi, trip, contingency, alternate and final-reserve fuel rather than multiplying flight time by an approximate hourly burn.

What route should you use from KJFK to MKJP?

Use a route generated for the flight date and matching AIRAC cycle rather than treating an old route string as permanently valid.

A typical KJFK–MKJP plan runs south from New York into offshore Atlantic routing, continues through or near the Bahamas, and then approaches Jamaica. Its basic structure is:

The bracketed descriptions are planning placeholders, not text to enter in the FMC. Exact fixes change with winds, ATC preferences, restricted airspace and navdata revisions. This flight crosses the western Atlantic and Caribbean, but it is not a North Atlantic Tracks flight; do not add NAT waypoints or oceanic procedures intended for Europe-bound crossings.

Leave the SID or STAR unset when the runway forecast is uncertain. It is cleaner to add the correct procedure later than to repair duplicated fixes and broken constraints after a runway change.

Which aircraft and cruise altitude work best?

An A320-family or 737-family aircraft is the most natural choice, although any jet with suitable range and runway performance can operate the sector.

For a normally loaded narrow-body, a planner may propose an initial level around FL340 or FL360. The route is predominantly southbound with a slightly westerly magnetic course, so even flight levels are commonly appropriate where semicircular rules apply. Aircraft weight, airway restrictions and ATC instructions take precedence over that rule of thumb.

How much fuel and which alternate should you plan?

Carry the fuel calculated for the exact aircraft, payload, forecast winds, route and reserve policy; there is no reliable universal KJFK–MKJP fuel figure.

MKJS at Montego Bay is a practical alternate candidate for many airliners because it is another major Jamaican airport, but it must still satisfy weather, runway, approach and fuel requirements for the aircraft being flown. A nearby airport is not a valid alternate merely because it appears on the simulator map.

  • Keep kilograms and pounds consistent between the planner and aircraft.
  • Add fuel for forecast convective deviations and expected holding.
  • Check landing weight at MKJP and at the alternate.
  • Do not count final reserve fuel as usable trip fuel.

Why does the KJFK to MKJP route fail in the FMC?

Most rejected routes result from mismatched navdata, incompatible procedures or an import format the aircraft does not fully support.

  • Missing airway or waypoint: the planner and FMC probably use different AIRAC cycles. Regenerate the route against the aircraft's database or enter validated direct legs.
  • Route discontinuity: inspect both sides before clearing it. Some discontinuities represent an expected vector segment; blindly joining them can create an unsafe turn.
  • Duplicated fixes: the imported route may already contain a departure or arrival transition. Remove the duplicate before adding the procedure.
  • Wrong Jamaican airport: confirm the destination is MKJP, not MKJS.
  • Route changes after import: some built-in planners recalculate imported files. Compare the resulting legs page with the original route rather than assuming the import remained intact.

MKJP arrival and approach planning

Plan the MKJP arrival from the runway wind, published approach and nearby terrain rather than simply descending directly towards the airport marker.

Norman Manley uses runway 12/30 and sits on the Palisadoes peninsula, with water around much of the immediate airport area and high terrain north and north-east of Kingston. Observe charted minimum altitudes and approach constraints, particularly in cloud or at night. If the FMC database lacks a suitable STAR, use the published approach transition or simulated ATC vectors instead of inventing a low-level shortcut.

Older FSX and Prepar3D airport data may not match newer procedure databases.
