How do I use a flight tracker?

To use a flight tracker, search by flight number for a specific service, or use an airport, route or aircraft registration search when available. Confirm the operating date and airports, then read the status, map position, altitude, groundspeed and estimated arrival time, allowing for reporting delays and coverage gaps.

For general flight simulation, distinguish a live aviation tracker from a simulator flight logger. The first follows real aircraft using surveillance and operational data; the second reads your virtual aircraft through a simulator connection. A public real-world tracker will not normally display your simulated flight.

How do I find the correct flight?

A flight number combined with its operating date is usually the most reliable way to identify a flight.

  1. Enter the flight number: Use the airline code and number shown on the booking or airport board. Spaces are usually optional, but do not add the aircraft registration unless the search specifically supports it.
  2. Select the departure date: Choose the date on which the flight leaves its origin. This matters for overnight services that arrive on the following calendar day.
  3. Confirm the route and time: Match the origin, destination and scheduled departure. Flight numbers are reused, often daily.
  4. Check the operating carrier: A codeshare can place several marketing flight numbers on one aircraft. The operating carrier's flight may be the one carrying the live position and callsign.
  5. Read the update time: A map marker is only as fresh as its last report. Check the timestamp before assuming the aircraft is still at that exact position.

If the flight number is unknown, search the departure or arrival airport and narrow the board by destination, airline and time. An aircraft registration can identify the physical airframe, but assignments may change before departure.

What does flight tracker data mean?

The map represents reported aircraft movement, while the status panel combines scheduled, actual and estimated operational times.

Why is a flight missing or frozen on the map?

Most missing or frozen flights result from an incorrect search, delayed data or limited surveillance coverage rather than a problem with the aircraft.

  • No live position yet: A scheduled flight may not appear on the map until its aircraft is transmitting and the tracker's data source receives it.
  • Wrong date or codeshare: Confirm the departure date and look for the operating carrier rather than only the marketing flight number.
  • Coverage gap: Updates can be less frequent over oceans, remote areas and at airports with weak ground coverage. Some segments may be estimated.
  • Stale marker: Compare the last-update time with the displayed clock. Refreshing cannot create new information if the source has not received another report.
  • Restricted or unavailable data: Some military, government or private operations are filtered, delayed or absent from a particular feed.
  • Operational change: A cancellation, diversion, aircraft swap or changed callsign can separate the flight from the result you originally opened.

Do not interpret a disappearing marker as evidence of an emergency. Public trackers are useful information tools, but they are not authoritative air traffic control or operational navigation systems.

Can I use a live flight tracker with a flight simulator?

Yes, a live tracker can supply the identity, timing, aircraft type and observed path needed to recreate a real service in Microsoft Flight Simulator, X-Plane, Prepar3D or FSX.

  1. Record the flight details: Note the operator, flight number, origin, destination, aircraft type and departure time. Treat the registration and livery as provisional until the real aircraft is assigned.
  2. Build the route separately: A tracker trail shows where the aircraft went, not necessarily its filed route, procedures or cleared waypoints. Radar vectors, direct clearances and holding patterns can all alter the visible path.
  3. Match conditions carefully: Set an appropriate simulator date, time and weather source. Historical flights will not match live weather automatically.
  4. Compare like with like: Use groundspeed and track for map comparisons. Do not copy tracker groundspeed into an indicated-airspeed target or chase every small position update.

Will a flight tracker show my virtual aircraft?

A public real-world flight tracker generally will not show a virtual aircraft because the simulator is not transmitting it as real aviation traffic.
