Compare the best free weather engines for MSFS, FSX, Prepar3D, X-Plane and FlightGear, with compatibility checks, setup fixes and recommendations.
The best free weather engine depends on the simulator: use built-in Live Weather in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020/2024 and X-Plane, FSXWX or FSrealWX for FSX, and FSrealWX, FSXWX or VFR Weather Companion for Prepar3D. FlightGear’s built-in real-weather system is the best fully free choice for FlightGear.
Here, “free” means no additional weather-engine purchase. Microsoft Flight Simulator and X-Plane are still paid simulators, while FlightGear is free. Our comparison of built-in and external live-weather tools covers the wider range of free and paid options.
Which free weather engine should I choose?
For most simmers, the best choice is the weather system designed for their simulator rather than a separate injector.
| Simulator | Best free choice | Best used for | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020/2024 | Built-in Live Weather | Global real-world conditions with native cloud and atmosphere rendering | Requires an internet connection. External Windows injectors cannot run on Xbox or, for MSFS 2024, PlayStation 5. |
| X-Plane 11/12 | Built-in real-world weather | Native weather without plug-in installation | Older third-party weather plug-ins may depend on outdated interpreters or weather feeds. |
| FSX | FSXWX, with FSrealWX as an alternative | METAR-based weather injection into an older simulator | Requires the correct connector and a functioning external weather source. |
| Prepar3D | FSrealWX or FSXWX; VFR Weather Companion for simpler VFR conditions | Free weather injection without buying a commercial engine | Compatibility varies between Prepar3D major releases. |
| FlightGear | Built-in real-weather mode | A completely free simulator and real-weather combination | Available data and launcher options can vary between FlightGear releases. |
FSXWX is our first freeware starting point for FSX. It injects downloaded weather through the simulator’s connection layer, but the correct build and SimConnect components matter. Our FSXWX download and connection notes explain the common FSX and SimConnect problems.
FSrealWX is a useful alternative for FSX and supported legacy simulators, especially when a matching release is available for the exact simulator version. Do not assume that one installer supports every edition bearing the FSX or Prepar3D name.
Prepar3D needs the most careful compatibility check. A utility described simply as “P3D compatible” may support only certain major releases or connector versions; our Prepar3D freeware compatibility breakdown compares FSrealWX, FSXWX and VFR Weather Companion in more detail.
Native weather engines may blend station observations with forecast or model data. That means the simulated wind, cloud layers or visibility will not always reproduce one airport METAR character for character, particularly between reporting stations.
Are free weather engines the same as weather presets?
No: a weather engine reads or generates changing atmospheric data, while a preset loads a fixed set of conditions.
- Live-weather injector: downloads observations or model data and updates the simulator during the flight.
- Weather generator: creates plausible conditions without necessarily representing real weather.
- Weather preset: provides repeatable clouds, wind and visibility for a specific scenario.
- Texture or visual mod: changes how clouds or the atmosphere look but does not supply meteorological data.
Our explanation of injectors, generators and built-in weather helps distinguish these tools. This matters because many downloads labelled as weather “mods” are only presets or visual replacements, not engines.
Why does a free weather injector fail to connect?
Most connection failures come from an incompatible simulator build, a missing connector, competing weather systems or an unavailable data feed.
- Check exact compatibility. Match the utility to the simulator, major release and required 32-bit or 64-bit connection component. FSX and different Prepar3D generations are not interchangeable.
- Run only one weather engine. Disable the simulator’s own live-weather updates when the injector requires user-defined weather. Two engines will overwrite each other, causing sudden wind shifts or conditions that repeatedly reset.
- Load a flight before connecting. Many legacy utilities connect more reliably after the aircraft is placed in the simulator. Follow the package’s specified start-up order if it differs.
- Check permissions and security software. A Windows utility running with different administrator permissions from the simulator may fail to communicate. Firewalls can also block downloaded weather or networked SimConnect traffic.
- Separate connection faults from data faults. Test a major reporting airport. If the utility connects but every station returns blank or stale data, the upstream weather source may be unavailable rather than the installation being broken.
If pressure and wind change but the clouds do not match expectations, the injector is probably connected. The simulator’s own renderer still decides how the injected layers appear. If every value remains fixed, investigate the connector, weather mode and data feed first.
Can live weather work without an internet connection?
Live weather cannot remain live without internet access because it must retrieve observations or forecast data. Some utilities retain the last download temporarily, but cached conditions become stale and should not be treated as real-time weather.
For offline flying, save a weather preset or create the conditions manually. Presets are also the better choice for instrument practice, comparisons and repeated approaches because each attempt begins with the same wind, pressure, visibility and cloud base.
