Can Airbus aircraft dump fuel, and when is it used?

Which Airbus aircraft can dump fuel?

Fuel-jettison capability is found mainly on larger Airbus wide-bodies, while the A220 and A320 families do not have a conventional fuel-dump system.

We avoid assuming that every aircraft in a broad family has identical equipment. The flight crew operating manual, cockpit controls and operator documentation establish whether an individual aircraft can jettison fuel. An installed system may also be unavailable because of a fault or dispatch restriction.

When is fuel jettison used before landing?

Fuel jettison is normally considered after an early return or diversion leaves the aircraft above its maximum landing weight, provided the emergency is stable enough to remain airborne.

  1. Control the original problem. The crew first deals with the engine, medical, pressurisation, system or security event that prompted the return.
  2. Decide how quickly the aircraft must land. Fire, smoke or another time-critical threat usually favours an immediate landing, even above maximum landing weight.
  3. Calculate the expected landing weight. Crews consider fuel burn, runway length, weather, approach speed, braking, terrain and any aircraft-system degradation.
  4. Choose between holding, jettisoning and landing overweight. Holding may suit a stable situation with only a modest excess. Jettisoning is useful when an equipped wide-body needs a larger reduction. An overweight landing is chosen when staying airborne creates the greater risk.
  5. Coordinate and monitor the discharge. As circumstances permit, the crew works with air traffic control, applies the type-specific checklist and stops at the required fuel quantity or weight.

Maximum landing weight is a certified structural limit for normal operations, not a barrier that prevents an emergency landing. An overweight landing can require adjusted speeds, a longer landing-distance calculation, careful touchdown technique and a maintenance inspection afterwards.

When practical, air traffic control routes a jettisoning aircraft away from dense traffic and populated areas and provides room at a suitable altitude. There is no universal altitude or location that overrides the emergency. The common claim that all dumped fuel evaporates before reaching the ground is too absolute: dispersal depends on altitude, temperature, droplet size, wind and the fuel itself.

Why can’t an Airbus A320 dump fuel?

The Airbus A320 family was certified without a fuel-jettison system because aircraft do not universally need one to satisfy the applicable performance requirements. Its crews therefore burn fuel while holding when that is safe, or conduct an overweight landing when the urgency justifies it.

How should fuel jettison work in a flight simulator?

A realistic simulator workflow depends on both the real aircraft and the depth of the add-on’s systems modelling. Confirm that the model represents an equipped variant, use its cockpit controls and checklist, and monitor gross weight and fuel distribution rather than changing fuel through the simulator menu.
