Learn what airport diagram hot spots mean, how to brief them before taxi, use ATC clearances and resolve chart-to-simulator scenery mismatches.
An airport diagram hot spot is a charted location on the movement area with a known or potential risk of collision, runway incursion or pilot confusion. Pilots should identify each hot spot before taxi, read its note, brief the exact threat and use outside signs, markings and ATC clearance to pass it safely.
For general flight simulation in MSFS, X-Plane, FSX, Prepar3D and similar platforms, hot spots should be treated exactly the same way: as advance warnings that a particular part of the airport demands more attention. They are especially useful when flying with online ATC or practising realistic ground procedures.
What does an airport hot spot look like on a diagram?
A hot spot is normally outlined on the airport diagram and assigned an identifier such as HS 1 or HS 2. The associated note explains the actual hazard; symbol shape, colour and note placement vary between chart formats and countries.
Typical reasons for designating a hot spot include:
- A complicated taxiway and runway intersection.
- Closely spaced or parallel surfaces that pilots may confuse.
- A runway crossing that is easy to miss after a turn.
- Pavement geometry that can lead an aircraft towards the wrong runway or taxiway.
- A location with a history of incorrect turns, missed holding points or runway incursions.
The identifier is primarily a chart annotation. Do not expect to find an HS 1 sign painted or installed at the airport. Instead, the physical cues will usually be ordinary taxiway signs, centreline markings, runway holding-position markings and runway designators. How should pilots brief airport hot spots before taxi?
Pilots should turn each hot-spot note into a specific threat-and-action briefing rather than merely noticing the circle on the chart.
- Check the diagram. Confirm the airport identifier and chart revision, then use the printed north arrow rather than assuming north is at the top. - Find every relevant hot spot. Review likely departure and arrival routes before moving. After receiving a taxi clearance, trace the exact cleared route and identify which hot spots it crosses.
- Read the hot-spot note. Establish what has gone wrong there before: a missed hold, wrong turn, wrong-surface departure or another specific risk.
- Name the positive cues. Brief the expected taxiway sign, runway number, holding-position marking and aircraft heading after the turn. A heading check is particularly useful where two runways could be confused.
- Plan attention management. Both pilots should be looking outside near the hazard. A single pilot should finish programming, chart changes and other heads-down tasks before reaching it.

Does a hot spot change an ATC taxi clearance?
A hot spot does not change, extend or cancel an ATC clearance, and its outline does not create a mandatory stop by itself.
If the clearance says to hold short of a runway, stop before the applicable holding-position marking. If ATC clears the aircraft across that runway, verify the runway identity and crossing clearance before entering. Never assume that a charted route, moving-map line or simulator taxi ribbon authorises a runway crossing.

If position or clearance becomes uncertain, stop in a safe place before entering the intersection or runway boundary and ask ATC to confirm the route or provide progressive taxi instructions. If the doubt arises after entering a runway, advise ATC immediately and follow instructions rather than stopping unpredictably on the runway.
What if the chart and simulator scenery disagree?
A chart-to-scenery mismatch usually means the airport diagram and simulated airport represent different stages of the real airport's development.
Common symptoms include changed taxiway letters, a missing connector, relocated holding points or an add-on airport conflicting with the simulator's base scenery. Simulator ATC data, moving maps and the visible 3D airport may also have been updated independently.
- Verify the basics. Check the airport code, chart revision and whether a separate airport add-on is active.
- Compare before moving. Locate the stand, destination runway and major intersections on both the diagram and the visible scenery.
- Protect the runway boundary. Do not enter or cross a runway merely because the simulator's guidance line directs you there.
- Tell online ATC. Stop clear of the runway, describe the missing or differently named taxiway and request an amended route or progressive instructions.
- Resolve persistent conflicts. Update or disable overlapping airport scenery rather than memorising an improvised route that may fail on the next flight.
The useful rule is simple: an airport hot spot tells pilots where to increase attention and why; it does not tell them where they are cleared to taxi. Read the note, brief the threat, verify the signs and markings, and stop before the hazard whenever the aircraft's position or clearance is uncertain.
