Pilots navigate unfamiliar airport taxiways by studying a current airport chart before moving, copying and reading back the taxi clearance, then matching taxiway signs, markings and lights to the chart. They taxi slowly, verify every intersection, protect runway holding points and stop to ask ATC whenever their position or clearance is uncertain.

What should pilots prepare before taxiing?
Pilots should identify their parking position, expected runway, likely taxi route, runway crossings and charted hot spots before releasing the brakes. They also check closures, construction and temporary restrictions from the airport's operational information and NOTAMs.

How is a taxi clearance followed?
A taxi clearance is followed one named taxiway and holding point at a time, with the route traced on the airport chart before movement begins.
- Copy the entire clearance. Write down or enter the taxiways, clearance limit, runway crossings and hold-short instructions. Exact phraseology differs between countries and airports.
- Read back critical instructions. Pilots follow local readback rules and always confirm runway entry, crossing and hold-short instructions.
- Trace the route. Locate every taxiway and intersection on the chart, paying particular attention to similarly named parallel taxiways and any hot spots.
- Taxi and verify. At each junction, compare the sign, pavement marking, compass heading and outside layout with the chart. One cue alone is not enough.
- Keep looking outside. In a multi-crew cockpit, the monitoring pilot follows the chart while the taxiing pilot maintains external awareness. A single pilot should stop if a lengthy chart check or cockpit task is required.
For example, Taxi to holding point Runway 27 via Alpha, Charlie; hold short Runway 18 authorises travel along Alpha and Charlie but does not authorise crossing Runway 18 or entering Runway 27.
Which taxiway signs, markings and lights matter most?
Pilots identify their position with location signs and use direction signs, yellow centrelines and surface lights to confirm the next turn.

A common error is following another aircraft or a painted centreline without checking where it leads. Neither provides permission to enter a taxiway or cross a runway.
How do pilots avoid a runway incursion?
Pilots treat every runway holding position as a deliberate stop-and-confirm point unless they have an unambiguous clearance to continue.
The standard runway holding marking has two solid and two dashed yellow lines. Approaching from the taxiway side, the aircraft stops before the solid lines. A taxi clearance to the runway is not take-off clearance, and pilots never infer permission to cross from another aircraft's movement.

After leaving a runway, the whole aircraft—including its tail—must pass beyond the applicable holding marking before the pilot reports clear.
What should a pilot do if lost while taxiing?
A pilot who is unsure of the aircraft's position should stop before entering an intersection or crossing any holding line, tell ATC and request detailed or progressive taxi instructions.
Guessing, making an improvised turn or continuing while trying to reload a chart converts simple uncertainty into an incursion risk. A suitable transmission is concise: state the callsign, report that the aircraft is holding and say that its position is uncertain. If the aircraft may already have entered a runway, the pilot must tell ATC immediately and follow the urgent instructions given.
Can pilots rely on GPS or an airport moving map?
An airport moving map is a valuable position check, but it does not replace the outside view, current chart or ATC clearance.
Database and airport-layout changes can place a displayed taxiway, closure or aircraft symbol incorrectly. Position displays may also lag during tight turns. The most reliable method combines the moving map with signs, markings, heading, expected intersection sequence and visual confirmation.
In a flight simulator, the same method provides better practice than following a taxi ribbon. One complication is that older scenery may not match a newer real-world chart, so unexplained taxiway-name or layout differences should be checked against the scenery's represented airport layout rather than treated automatically as pilot error.
How does taxiing work at an airport without ground control?
At a non-towered airport, pilots remain responsible for choosing a safe route, giving way and avoiding runway conflicts because no ground controller issues a taxi clearance.
They study the diagram, monitor the published traffic frequency, make calls according to local procedures and visually check the approach and runway before crossing or entering. Surface signs and markings retain the same meaning, but a radio transmission is not permission and does not guarantee that another aircraft has heard it.
