What was the Antonov An-225 Mriya, and why was it built?

The Antonov An-225 Mriya was a six-engine Soviet heavy-lift transport aircraft designed by the Antonov bureau in Kyiv. It was built primarily to carry the Buran space shuttle and oversized Energia rocket components between manufacturing and launch sites—loads that existing Soviet transport aircraft could not handle efficiently.

In real-world aviation, Mriya—Ukrainian for “dream”—became famous as the largest and heaviest operational aircraft of its era. That distinction was a result of its space-programme assignment, however, rather than the original objective: it was a purpose-built transport solution, not simply an attempt to make the world's biggest aeroplane.

Why did the Buran programme need the An-225?

The Soviet Buran–Energia programme needed to move extremely large spacecraft and rocket sections to the Baikonur launch complex. Their dimensions made conventional rail transport impractical, while existing aircraft lacked the necessary combination of payload capacity, structural strength and clearance for an external load.

The converted Myasishchev VM-T Atlant had provided an interim solution, but it imposed greater restrictions on payload mass and configuration. The An-225 was intended to carry Buran on top of its fuselage, transport large Energia components and potentially return an orbiter from an alternative landing site.

Why wasn't the An-124 large enough?

The four-engine An-124 Ruslan provided the An-225's basic airframe, but it could not simply have Buran strapped to its roof. Antonov substantially enlarged and redesigned the aircraft to handle the orbiter's weight, aerodynamic interference and concentrated structural loads.

The An-225 did not retain the An-124's rear cargo ramp, which saved structural weight. Freight was loaded through the raised nose after the forward landing gear had lowered the fuselage.

Did the An-225 launch Buran into space?

No. Buran launched vertically on the Energia rocket; the An-225 was its ferry aircraft, not its airborne launcher. The orbiter was secured above the fuselage for transport, much as NASA transported its Space Shuttles on modified Boeing 747s, although the Soviet aircraft was designed around a much broader heavy-lift role.

The timing often causes confusion. Buran completed its only orbital flight in November 1988, while the An-225 first flew on 21 December 1988. Mriya subsequently carried Buran during flight testing and public demonstrations, but the space programme ended before the aircraft could support routine orbiter operations. What was the An-225 used for after Buran?

After the Soviet space programme collapsed, the aircraft was stored and later restored for commercial service. From 2001, Antonov Airlines used it to move generators, turbines and other indivisible cargo that was too heavy or bulky for ordinary freighters.

That second career demonstrated that the design was useful beyond Buran. Its enormous internal hold, opening nose and ability to accept external loads made it suitable for exceptional projects, although runway length, pavement strength, airport handling equipment and operating cost sharply limited where it could fly. Was more than one An-225 built?

Only one An-225 was completed and flown. A second airframe was partly assembled but never finished, which is why references to “the An-225” usually mean the sole operational aircraft; the distinction is explained in our account of the completed and unfinished An-225 airframes.

The operational Mriya was destroyed at Hostomel Airport in February 2022 during Russia's invasion of Ukraine. That loss ended the flying career of the original aircraft, but it did not change the reason it existed: the An-225 was created to solve the Buran programme's extraordinary transport problem, then successfully repurposed as a commercial heavy-lift freighter.
