What the Cessna O-2A Skymaster was, how its push-pull Cessna 337 design worked, and how it marked targets and controlled air strikes in Vietnam.
The Cessna O-2A Skymaster was a US military observation and forward-air-control aircraft derived from the civilian Cessna 337. Best known for Vietnam War service, it located and marked targets, directed strike aircraft and artillery, relayed battlefield information, and assessed attack results. Cessna called the military airframe the Model 337M.

The O-2A was developed by adapting an aircraft already in production rather than waiting for a completely new combat design. That allowed the US Air Force to field a twin-engined forward-air-control aircraft quickly during the Vietnam War.
What made the O-2A suitable for forward air control?
The O-2A combined useful low-speed handling, side-by-side seating, observation glazing and military communications equipment with the redundancy of two engines.
Its front engine pulled in the conventional manner while the rear engine drove a pusher propeller behind the cabin. Because both thrust lines were close to the centreline, an engine failure did not produce the large thrust-induced yaw associated with a conventional wing-mounted twin. Centreline thrust made directional control easier after losing an engine, but it did not preserve twin-engine performance. At high weight, in hot weather or over elevated terrain, the remaining engine might provide little climb capability. Rear-engine cooling and temperature management also required attention, especially during prolonged ground running.
Compared with a civilian Cessna 337, the O-2A received military radios and antennas, observation-related cabin changes and four underwing hardpoints. The airframe was compact and relatively economical, although its modest speed, limited protection and predictable observation orbits made it vulnerable to ground fire.
How was the Cessna O-2A used in Vietnam?
In Vietnam, O-2A forward air controllers acted as airborne links between troops on the ground, artillery units, command elements and incoming strike aircraft.
Exact radio calls and clearance procedures varied by unit, mission and period, but a typical forward-air-control task followed this sequence:
- Confirm friendly positions. The controller established contact with ground forces and identified friendly troops, civilians, boundaries and areas where weapons use was restricted.
- Locate and identify the target. The O-2A orbited while the pilot or crew examined roads, vegetation, buildings and reported enemy positions. Positive identification was essential before bringing faster aircraft into the attack.
- Mark the target. The O-2A commonly fired a smoke-producing rocket, often using white phosphorus, near the intended target. The visible marker gave strike pilots a reference that was easier to acquire than map coordinates alone.
- Brief and control the strike. The controller passed target details, known threats, friendly locations, attack headings and escape directions, then observed and corrected individual passes.
- Assess the result. After the attack, the O-2A remained overhead to inspect the target, request another pass when authorised and report the outcome.
The aircraft also performed visual and route reconnaissance, artillery adjustment, communications relay and support for search-and-rescue operations. Endurance near the operating area and the ability to inspect it carefully mattered more than outright speed. Was the Cessna O-2A armed?
Yes, the O-2A could carry light military stores, but target-marking rockets rather than sustained attack weapons defined its normal combat role.
Four underwing hardpoints could carry rocket launchers, flares and other authorised light stores, with the actual load depending on the unit and mission. Smoke-marker rockets allowed the controller to point out a target without relying solely on verbal directions.
Photographs of an O-2A carrying rocket pods can therefore be misleading if they are interpreted as evidence that it was primarily a light attack aircraft. Its main purpose was to find, identify and mark the target, then direct aircraft carrying a much heavier weapons load.
The O-2A was not armoured for repeated exposure to concentrated fire. Two engines offered another option after mechanical failure or battle damage, but damage to controls, fuel systems or the crew could still be fatal. Nor could one engine always maintain altitude under demanding conditions.
Is the O-2A the same as the O-2B or civilian Cessna 337?
The O-2A, O-2B and civilian Cessna 337 belong to the same Skymaster family, but their equipment and intended missions were different.

The phrase “Cessna 337 Vietnam” usually refers to the O-2 relationship, but not every military-operated or military-painted Skymaster was an O-2A. A civilian 337 in combat-style markings remains a 337 unless it has the relevant military configuration and history; an O-2B is also not simply an O-2A with another paint scheme.
Did the O-2A replace the O-1 Bird Dog?
The O-2A was introduced as a rapid successor to the single-engined O-1 Bird Dog and as an interim step before larger numbers of the purpose-built OV-10 Bronco became available.
Compared with the O-1, the Skymaster offered another engine, more room for equipment and personnel, and greater capacity for radios and external stores. The O-1 remained valuable for austere operations, however, and replacement was not instantaneous. The OV-10 Bronco was designed specifically for combat observation. Its cockpit visibility, payload, field performance and survivability made it better suited to demanding forward-air-control work, but it did not make every O-2A redundant overnight. Skymasters continued in observation, training and support duties, and surviving aircraft later passed to other government, overseas and civilian operators.
What should flight-simulator pilots expect from an O-2A?
A simulator O-2A should fly broadly like a military-equipped Cessna 337, while its external stores, radios, observation details and livery distinguish the military version.
The most common engine-out mistake is waiting for the strong yaw associated with a conventional twin. Centreline thrust suppresses that cue, so identify the failed engine using engine instruments such as revolutions, manifold pressure and fuel flow where the add-on models them. Losing half the available power still causes a major reduction in acceleration and climb.
- Map both engines separately. Check that throttle, propeller and mixture controls operate engines one and two rather than moving only a combined axis.
- Verify the rear engine by instruments. Its sound and propeller can be less obvious from the cockpit, particularly in add-ons with simple audio or animation.
- Use realistic weight and weather. A lightly loaded aircraft at low altitude can create an unrealistically reassuring impression of single-engine performance.
- Check what the add-on actually models. Rocket pods, antennas and military panels may be visual only. A military repaint does not add functional target marking, FAC radios or weapon systems to a civilian flight model.
- Follow the supplied checklist. Engine limits and failure behaviour differ between simulator packages, so generic Skymaster advice should not replace the documentation provided with the model.
