How do the Boeing 737-300, -400 and -500 differ?

In real-world aviation and flight simulation, the Boeing 737-300 is the baseline 737 Classic, the 737-400 is a longer, higher-capacity stretch, and the 737-500 is a shortened 737-200 replacement. All use CFM56-3 engines and broadly common systems, but their seating, payload, range and handling margins differ.

The essential difference is fuselage length: the 737-400 is the longest, the 737-500 the shortest, and the 737-300 sits between them. Those seating figures describe representative layouts, not fixed limits. Seat pitch, cabin classes, emergency-exit approval and operator equipment can change the total substantially. Published range figures also depend on payload, reserves, engine rating and optional fuel arrangements, so the table shows the usual relationship rather than flight-planning numbers.

The 737-400 offers the most cabin and freight volume, but its extra structure and payload reduce range compared with the shorter aircraft. The lighter 737-500 generally has the best range and short-field performance of the three, although it carries fewer passengers. The 737-300 is the compromise between capacity and operating flexibility.

How can you identify each 737 Classic variant?

Count the overwing exits and compare the fuselage length to identify the three variants reliably.

  • 737-300: medium-length fuselage with one overwing exit on each side.
  • 737-400: visibly longer fuselage, two overwing exits on each side and a tail skid beneath the rear fuselage.
  • 737-500: short, stocky appearance with one overwing exit on each side and noticeably less fuselage behind the wing.

All three have the Classic's low-mounted CFM56 nacelles with their distinctive flattened lower profile. Winglets are not a dependable identification method because some aircraft received retrofits. A large cargo door also does not define the underlying variant: many 737-300 and 737-400 freighters were converted from passenger aircraft.

Do the 737-300, -400 and -500 fly differently?

Yes, although they retain the same basic 737 control philosophy and broadly common wing. Weight, fuselage length and inertia give each variant a different feel.

The heavier 737-400 usually needs more runway, carries greater momentum and has the highest tail-strike exposure during rotation and landing. Its tail skid offers protection but does not excuse an excessive rotation rate or an overdone flare. The 737-500 is lighter and generally uses lower speeds at comparable operating conditions, while the 737-300 falls between them.

A mistake we see constantly in simulators is reusing one set of speeds for every Classic. V-speeds are weight-, flap- and condition-dependent; they should come from the aircraft's performance system, documentation or trustworthy tables. The same warning applies to fuel and payload. Loading a 737-500 with a 737-400 passenger count, or copying the -500 fuel requirement into a fully loaded -400, produces unrealistic centre-of-gravity, runway and climb results.

Do they use the same engines and cockpit?

They all use versions of the CFM56-3 turbofan, but engine sub-models and thrust ratings differ with aircraft configuration. The CFM56-3 should not be confused with the later CFM56-7B fitted to 737 Next Generation aircraft.

The flight decks share the Classic architecture, yet individual panels are not necessarily identical. Operators selected different avionics, engine instruments and flight-management equipment, and many aircraft were modified during service. In a simulator, an analogue instrument, EFIS display or particular FMC may reflect an airline fit or retrofit rather than prove that the developer modelled the wrong fuselage variant.

Which 737 Classic should I choose in a flight simulator?

Choose the variant according to the route and payload you want to reproduce, not simply the livery.

  • Choose the 737-300 for the most representative all-round Classic experience and a balance of capacity and range.
  • Choose the 737-400 for denser passenger routes, cargo conversions and the extra challenge of managing a longer, heavier airframe.
  • Choose the 737-500 for lower-demand routes, shorter fields and the closest Classic-era successor to the 737-200.

Also distinguish a complete aircraft from a texture-only repaint. For example, the FS2004 737-500 repaint listing identifies the required FFX base aircraft. Installing only the repaint files without that base model is a common reason the aircraft fails to appear or loads with missing components.
