How does live weather differ in MSFS 2020 and 2024?

Ian Stephens
In short

Compare MSFS 2020 vs 2024 Live Weather: data, cloud depiction, accuracy, platform support, setup and fixes for incorrect conditions.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 uses the same basic idea as MSFS 2020—server-delivered, modelled real-world weather—but presents it with a newer atmosphere, broader cloud variety and more detailed weather effects. It is not a simple METAR mirror: both versions blend forecast data and observations, so airport conditions can differ from reported weather.

MSFS 2020 vs 2024 Live Weather differences

The largest change is weather depiction, not a fundamentally different definition of live weather.

Core weather methodDownloads a global, model-led weather picture informed by real-world observations.Uses the same broad online approach through an updated weather and atmospheric system.
Cloud depictionUses the original simulator’s volumetric cloud system.Adds broader cloud variety, including high-level cirrus, with revised cloud and atmospheric rendering.
Weather effectsModels wind, pressure, temperature, precipitation, visibility and turbulence.Presents a wider range of atmospheric effects, although not every available effect is necessarily driven by the live feed.
METAR matchingCan differ from the latest airport report because model data and observations are blended. Can still differ; improved presentation does not guarantee an exact match to the newest METAR.
PlatformsBuilt-in Live Weather is available on PC and Xbox Series X|S.Built-in Live Weather is available on PC, Xbox Series X|S, PS5 and PS5 Pro.
External weather enginesHas the more established selection of PC weather injectors.Requires explicit MSFS 2024 compatibility; a 2020 injector should not be assumed to work.

The richer clouds in MSFS 2024 can make identical source conditions look noticeably different. Its seasonal and world systems also affect the scene around the aircraft, but they are not a separate set of live observations.

Is MSFS 2024 Live Weather more accurate than 2020?

MSFS 2024 generally offers more detailed weather presentation, but it is not guaranteed to match an airport’s latest METAR more closely than MSFS 2020.

A METAR is a point observation for one airfield, while the simulator must build a continuous atmosphere across the globe. Reports, forecast-model updates and in-simulator transitions can also arrive at different times. As a result, pressure and wind may be close while visibility, precipitation or the cloud base differs.

Historical dates do not retrieve archived real-world weather. If Live Weather is selected while the clock is moved to another date, the result should not be treated as historical weather for that date. Our explanation of how time and date interact with weather settings covers that distinction.

How do I turn on Live Weather in both versions?

Both simulators require online functionality and the Live Weather option to be selected before the flight loads.

  1. Enable online data. Check the simulator’s Data or Online settings and make sure Online Functionality is enabled.
  2. Test in Free Flight. Some activities and career missions control their own environmental conditions, which can make the weather selector unavailable or override it.
  3. Select Live Weather. Open the weather or flight-conditions control and choose Live Weather rather than a named preset or custom weather.
  4. Select live time when appropriate. This keeps daylight and the displayed time aligned with the real-world feed, but it does not change how the weather data itself is sourced.
  5. Load the flight and check instruments. Compare pressure, wind and temperature as well as the clouds; visual appearance alone is a poor test.

Why does Live Weather look wrong or stay clear?

Clear, static or obviously incorrect weather is usually caused by disabled online services, a selected preset, locked activity conditions or a temporary server problem.

  • Confirm that Online Functionality remains enabled and that the simulator has an internet connection.
  • Return to the flight-planning screen and explicitly reselect Live Weather; changing any weather layer creates or selects custom conditions.
  • Try the same airport in Free Flight to rule out an activity that fixes the weather.
  • Check the altimeter setting, surface wind and temperature. If those are plausible but the cloud cover differs, the live feed may be working and the difference may come from data timing or model blending.
  • Return to the main menu and reload the flight. Restarting the simulator can clear a stalled session, but it cannot repair an outage affecting the online weather service.

Can the same weather add-on be used in both versions?

No—MSFS 2020 weather injectors are not automatically compatible with Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024.

Choose the built-in system unless an add-on specifically names your simulator version. Native external weather engines are generally PC-only, so Xbox and PlayStation users rely on the built-in Live Weather and presets. A cloud texture or preset package is also not necessarily a live weather engine; our comparison of built-in and external live weather programs explains which type of tool changes actual conditions.
