What is the Boeing 737 MAX 10, and how does it differ?

The Boeing 737 MAX 10, also called the 737-10, is the longest and highest-capacity 737 MAX. For Aviation & Real-World Flying readers, its defining differences are a stretched fuselage, more seats and cargo volume, shorter nominal range, and revised main landing gear compared with the MAX 7, MAX 8 and MAX 9.

How do the 737 MAX variants compare?

The MAX family uses progressively longer fuselages to trade range and airport flexibility for passenger capacity. These figures are rounded planning comparisons rather than guaranteed airline performance.

Seat totals depend on galley size, lavatories, premium seating, seat pitch and approved exit configuration. Range also changes with payload, reserves, wind, temperature and alternate-airport requirements; the figures above are not hard operational limits.

How is the MAX 10 different from the MAX 9?

The MAX 10 is approximately 1.6 metres longer than the MAX 9 and accommodates roughly ten more passengers in a comparable two-class layout. Its published design range is about 200 nautical miles lower because the longer, heavier airframe prioritises capacity over maximum reach.

A dense, approved MAX 10 configuration can accommodate up to 230 passengers. The necessary door and exit arrangement is therefore part of the variant’s physical design, not something an airline can reproduce by adding seats to a MAX 9.

Why does the MAX 10 have different landing gear?

The MAX 10 uses revised, levered main landing gear because its longer fuselage reduces tail clearance during take-off rotation. The taller gear and associated shrink mechanism provide extra clearance while allowing the assembly to retract within the established 737 wheel-well envelope.

This reduces the geometric penalty of the stretch, but it does not eliminate tail-strike risk. Crews must still use the correct MAX 10 take-off speeds, loading data and rotation technique rather than copying MAX 8 or MAX 9 figures.

Does the MAX 10 use the same engines and cockpit?

All principal MAX variants use the CFM LEAP-1B engine family and share the same broad cockpit and systems architecture. That commonality supports operation within the 737 type-rating framework, subject to each regulator’s and airline’s approved differences training.

Common engines do not make the variants operationally interchangeable. Thrust ratings, operating weights, centre-of-gravity limits, V-speeds, runway requirements and payload-range performance are specific to the aircraft and operator configuration.

Which 737 MAX variant suits each airline mission?

  • Choose the MAX 7 for thinner routes where range, field performance and fewer seats matter more than maximum capacity.
  • Choose the MAX 8 for the family’s central balance of capacity, range and airport compatibility.
  • Choose the MAX 8-200 when a high-density cabin and low seat cost are the priorities.
  • Choose the MAX 9 when more capacity than the MAX 8 is needed without moving to the longest fuselage.
  • Choose the MAX 10 for the most seats and cargo volume when route length, runway performance and airport limits permit it.

What should flight-simulator users check?

A proper MAX 10 simulation needs more than a MAX 8 repaint. The cockpit workflow may be familiar, but the exterior model, door positions, landing gear, weights, centre of gravity and performance profile must represent the longer aircraft.

  • Match the livery to the model. MAX 8, MAX 9 and MAX 10 textures are not automatically interchangeable; windows, doors and registrations may be displaced. Our advice on matching freeware liveries to add-on aircraft explains the checks to make.
  • Select the right aircraft profile. Where a planner supports ICAO type designators, the MAX 10 uses B3XM, rather than the MAX 8’s B38M or MAX 9’s B39M.
  • Do not reuse MAX 8 take-off data. Incorrect weights, trim, flap assumptions or V-speeds can produce unrealistic runway performance and rotation behaviour.
  • Separate systems fidelity from variant fidelity. An add-on may reproduce the familiar MAX cockpit while retaining another variant’s flight model.
