Can a Boeing 747 really land at St Maarten?

Yes, Boeing 747s have operated at Princess Juliana International Airport, whose codes are SXM and TNCM. Its single runway 10/28 is approximately 2,300 metres or 7,546 feet long, although the published landing distance available may be shorter than the physical pavement.

That is enough only when weight, wind, runway condition, temperature and braking performance produce an acceptable stopping margin. A 747 cannot simply arrive at maximum weight and assume it will fit. Historic 747 operations used properly planned landing weights and remained subject to operator limits.

The famous approach over Maho Beach is to runway 10. Runway 28 must be used when traffic, wind or operational requirements dictate; pilots do not select runway 10 merely for the view.

How do you fly the runway 10 approach in a simulator?

  1. Load TNCM and verify the runway. Confirm that the simulator’s scenery, navigation data and weather all identify runway 10 correctly. Older add-ons can have misplaced thresholds, inaccurate visual guidance or outdated approach data.
  2. Set a realistic landing weight. Do not begin the approach with a long-haul take-off fuel load. Enter the actual weight into the FMC or performance tool, then confirm that the available runway is sufficient.   3. Calculate Vref and Vapp. Obtain Vref from the FMC, EFB or documentation supplied with the aircraft model. Apply the model’s approved wind additive rather than adding an arbitrary five or ten knots. Flaps 30 is a common landing configuration; use flaps 25 only when the performance calculation and aircraft procedure support it.
  4. Configure before short final. Extend the landing gear and flaps on schedule, arm the speed brakes, select a performance-appropriate autobrake setting and complete the landing checklist. Set the correct local pressure so that altitude calls and visual guidance agree.
  5. Become stabilised early. Maintain the calculated speed, landing configuration, centreline and normal descent path. Many operators use gates around 1,000 feet in instrument conditions and 500 feet in visual conditions, but exact criteria vary. Do not continue an unstable approach simply because Maho Beach is already in sight.
  6. Follow the approach path, not the beach. Use the current published procedure and correctly modelled visual guidance. Cross the threshold at the normal height, typically about 50 feet for a standard path. Diving towards the beach produces an unsafe threshold crossing and leaves less energy control for the flare.
  7. Correct the crosswind smoothly. Crab into the wind during final, then de-crab near touchdown while preventing drift.   8. Flare without floating. In many simulated 747 variants, a small flare beginning near 30 feet radio altitude is a useful baseline. Reduce thrust and raise the nose only a few degrees. The cockpit sits high and well ahead of the main gear, so waiting for a light-aircraft sight picture usually causes a late flare.
  9. Touch down and stop positively. Place the main gear within the touchdown zone rather than holding off for an unusually soft landing. Confirm spoiler deployment, apply reverse thrust and let the autobrakes or manual wheel brakes decelerate the aircraft. Lower the nose gently and maintain centreline control throughout the rollout.

What approach speed should you use?

There is no single correct St Maarten approach speed for every Boeing 747. Many normal-weight 747-400 simulator approaches fall roughly between 140 and 155 KIAS, but that range is illustrative rather than a target; the computed Vref for the exact weight, variant and flap setting takes priority.

Why does the Maho Beach approach look dangerously low?

The aircraft appears exceptionally low because the beach and perimeter boundary sit close to runway 10’s threshold. A normal descent path therefore carries a large aircraft low over spectators without requiring the pilot to aim below the proper glide path.

The 747’s size exaggerates the effect: its main gear hangs below the fuselage while the cockpit remains much higher. In a simulator, do not lower the nose to recreate photographs. Maintain the published path and let the runway geometry create the familiar view.

When should you go around at St Maarten?

Go around whenever the approach is unstable or the aircraft cannot land in the touchdown zone with adequate stopping margin. Typical warning signs include:

  • airspeed outside the aircraft or operator’s stabilised-approach limits;
  • excessive sink rate or large control corrections near the threshold;
  • a tailwind or crosswind beyond the model’s permitted limit;
  • incorrect flap, gear, spoiler or braking configuration;
  • a runway that is occupied, wet beyond the calculation, or shorter than expected; and
  • floating beyond the planned touchdown point.

Use TO/GA and follow the published missed-approach procedure represented by the simulator. Terrain lies beyond the airport, so improvising a low-level turn is the wrong response. Once reverse thrust has been selected, normal airline procedure is to complete the stop rather than attempt another take-off.

Can you autoland a 747 at St Maarten?

Do not assume autoland is available simply because the aircraft can track towards the runway. A valid autoland requires compatible ground guidance, an authorised procedure, serviceable aircraft systems and the correct crew setup; simulator scenery and navigation data may not reproduce all of those conditions.
