There is no single maximum landing weight for every Boeing 747. In real-world aviation and realistic flight simulation, the widely used 747-400 passenger model is normally limited to 630,000 lb (285,763 kg); the 747-8 Intercontinental allows 688,000 lb (312,072 kg), and the 747-8 Freighter reaches 763,000 lb (346,091 kg).

These are representative certified maxima for the principal later configurations. An individual aircraft may have a different approved limit because of its variant, gross-weight option or modification, so its aircraft flight manual and operator data remain authoritative. Is maximum landing weight the actual landing weight?
No. Maximum landing weight is a certified structural ceiling, while actual landing weight is the aircraft's expected weight at touchdown. It is calculated from take-off weight after subtracting fuel consumed or jettisoned during the flight.
A 747 can take off much heavier than it may land because a large amount of fuel is normally burned en route. Maximum take-off weight, maximum zero-fuel weight and maximum landing weight therefore serve different purposes, as covered in our guide to aircraft weight, balance and operating limits.

Why can a 747 freighter land heavier?
Freighter variants are certified for a different structure and mission, including substantially more payload remaining aboard at arrival. That is why the 747-8F has a 763,000 lb limit while the passenger 747-8 Intercontinental is limited to 688,000 lb.
The limits are not interchangeable. A common mistake is to find the higher 747-8F figure and apply it to any aircraft labelled “747-8”, even when the model is the passenger Intercontinental.
What happens if a Boeing 747 must land overweight?
Safety takes priority, so an urgent landing should not be delayed solely to bring the aircraft below MLW. If the situation allows, the crew may hold to burn fuel or use the 747's fuel-jettison system before returning.
For an overweight approach, speeds and landing-distance calculations must use the actual expected weight rather than the normal MLW. After touchdown, maintenance action is determined by the aircraft's procedures; an inspection is commonly required, with touchdown weight and sink rate among the factors considered.
Exceeding MLW does not mean the landing gear will automatically fail. It means the aircraft has operated beyond its normal certified structural limit and must be treated accordingly.
Which maximum landing weight should I use in a simulator?
Use the limit supplied for the exact simulated variant, especially with detailed add-ons that model performance and flight-management calculations.
- Check the suffix: distinguish the 747-400 from the 747-400ER, and the 747-8 Intercontinental from the 747-8F.
- Check the units: pounds, kilograms and tonnes are easily confused. A displayed value of 285.8 tonnes corresponds to roughly 630,000 lb.
- Do not enter MTOW: maximum take-off weight is substantially higher and is not a valid landing limit.
- Compare projected landing weight: the flight plan's estimated touchdown weight should normally remain below the applicable MLW and any lower runway-performance limit.
If the simulated aircraft's documentation differs from a generic reference table, use the figure provided for that model. Simplified aircraft may not reproduce structural exceedances or post-landing inspections, but the correct weight still matters for approach speed, stopping distance and realistic flight planning.
