The Boeing 767 and 777 are both twin-engine wide-body airliners, but the 767 is the older, narrower and lighter aircraft, usually seating about 200–260 passengers. How much bigger is the Boeing 777 than the 767?

A 777 is wider than every 767 and, in comparable versions, markedly longer and heavier. The 63.7-metre 777-200 is already longer than the 61.4-metre 767-400ER, while the 777-300ER extends to roughly 73.9 metres.

The difference becomes clearer with the popular -300ER models. A 767-300ER has a maximum take-off weight of about 187 tonnes, depending on its certified option; a 777-300ER can reach approximately 351.5 tonnes. The latter also uses much larger GE90 engines and carries far more fuel and payload.

That does not make the 777 automatically more economical. It normally costs more to operate per flight, while its per-seat or per-tonne economics depend on filling the extra capacity. Airlines favour a 767-sized aircraft where a 777 would leave too many seats empty.

How can you identify a 767 and 777?

The quickest reliable external clue is the main landing gear: a 767 has four wheels per main bogie, while a 777 has six. The 777 also has a visibly wider fuselage and engines that appear much larger relative to nearby people, vehicles and airport equipment.

  • From inside the cabin: a standard 767 economy row is usually 2-3-2, whereas a 777 commonly uses 3-3-3 or 3-4-3.
  • From the side: even the shorter 777-200 has a heavier, broader appearance than a 767. Length alone can mislead because the long 767-400ER approaches the length of a 777-200.
  • From the wingtip: do not rely on winglets or raked tips. These vary by 767 variant and modification, while legacy 777 and 777X wing designs also differ.
  • From the model suffix: a -300 designation does not mean equivalent size across the two families. A 777-300 is far larger than a 767-300.

Do 767 and 777 pilots need different training?

Yes, the 767 and 777 require separate type qualifications and aircraft-specific training under the applicable regulator and operator rules. Similar Boeing terminology, yokes and cockpit logic do not make them interchangeable.

The 767 uses an earlier conventional flight-control architecture. The 777 was Boeing's first commercial airliner designed with full digital fly-by-wire primary controls, although its yoke and programmed control feel deliberately retain familiar Boeing handling cues.

A 767-400ER flight deck can look particularly 777-like because of its large displays, but that visual similarity does not create a shared type rating. The 757 and 767 have formal commonality arrangements in several regulatory systems; the 777 remains a separate type.

Is the Boeing 777 a replacement for the 767?

No, the 777 was designed for a larger capacity and payload category rather than as a direct 767 replacement. Boeing's 787 family became the closer passenger-market successor for many routes previously served by the 767.

The distinction is especially clear in freight operations. A 767 freighter is well suited to medium-wide-body express and parcel networks, while a 777 freighter carries a much heavier payload over longer distances. Both may serve the same airline, but they perform different jobs.

Both families can operate long overwater sectors when the aircraft, engine combination, operator and route hold the required ETOPS approvals. The 767's age does not confine it to short flights, and the 777's greater capability does not mean every version outranges every 767 under every payload condition.

What the difference means in a flight simulator

In a flight simulator, the 767 generally gives you a smaller, more conventional aircraft with less inertia and an older flight deck, while the 777 demands heavier-aircraft energy management and more reliance on its fly-by-wire and automated systems. Add-on depth and flight-model quality can outweigh those real-world differences.
