Boeing 777 vs Airbus A340: what are the main differences?

Which 777 and A340 variants are comparable?

The closest matches are based on mission and size rather than model-number sequence.

  • 777-200ER vs A340-300: Both are about 63.7 metres long and served mainstream long-haul routes. The 777 has the wider cabin and two larger engines; the A340 has four smaller CFM56s.
  • 777-200LR vs A340-500: These are the ultra-long-range versions. Published range figures vary with payload, reserves and manufacturer assumptions, so payload-range capability is more meaningful than a single brochure number.
  • 777-300ER vs A340-600: These are the large-capacity counterparts. The A340-600 is longer at about 75.4 metres versus 73.9 metres, but the wider 777 usually accommodates more seats in comparable airline layouts.

Why did airlines favour the 777 over the A340?

The 777 generally provides lower fuel and maintenance costs than its closest A340 counterpart. Two engines mean fewer nacelles, pylons and engine accessories, as well as fewer engines requiring inspection and overhaul.

A mistake we see constantly is assuming that four engines consume exactly twice as much fuel as two. They do not: the A340's individual engines are smaller, and total consumption depends on weight, speed, payload and variant. Even so, the extra drag and maintenance burden usually leave the A340 at an economic disadvantage per seat.

The A340 originally had a route-planning advantage because it was not restricted by the twin-engine diversion limits of its era. As ETOPS approvals expanded and high-thrust engines became more reliable, the 777 could operate the same remote oceanic routes while retaining twin-engine economics. The 777 therefore displaced the A340 commercially, although it was not a literal one-for-one replacement in every fleet.

Are four engines safer than two?

Four engines provide additional propulsion redundancy, but engine count alone does not make the A340 safer than the 777. A modern twin must demonstrate demanding engine reliability, diversion and system-redundancy standards before receiving extended-range approval.

An A340 loses one of four engines after a single failure, whereas a 777 loses one of two, so their engine-out performance and procedures differ. Which aircraft is bigger and more comfortable?

The A340-600 is slightly longer than the 777-300ER, but every conventional 777 has a wider fuselage than the A340. That extra width permits more seats per row and gives airlines greater flexibility in aisle and premium-cabin layouts.

Economy comfort depends heavily on the operator. An A340's usual 2-4-2 layout gives window passengers direct access to a pair of seats, while a nine-abreast 777 commonly uses 3-3-3. Many 777 operators install ten-abreast 3-4-3 seating, however, so the aircraft's wider cabin does not automatically produce a wider seat. Seat width, pitch and padding must be checked by airline configuration.

How do the 777 and A340 cockpits differ?

The A340 follows Airbus philosophy with sidesticks, a Flight Control Unit and thrust levers that remain in selected detents while autothrust changes engine power. In normal law, its flight-control computers impose strong pitch, bank, speed and load-factor protections.

The 777 is also fly-by-wire, but pilots use linked control columns with tactile feedback. Its autothrottle physically moves the thrust levers, and its mode-control and flight-management logic follow Boeing conventions. The result feels more traditional even though computers still translate control inputs and provide envelope protection.

Handling also varies within each family. A heavily loaded A340-300 can require a long take-off roll and a patient initial climb because of its CFM56 installation. The Trent-powered A340-500/-600 behaves differently, while the GE90-powered long-range 777 variants have far larger engines and stronger thrust performance.

How can you tell a 777 from an A340?

The quickest identification method is to count the engines; landing gear confirms the answer when the aircraft is distant or partly obscured.

  • Engines: The 777 has two very large turbofans. The A340 has four smaller engines.
  • Main landing gear: The 777 has two six-wheel main bogies and no centre body gear. The A340 has two four-wheel wing bogies plus centreline gear.
  • Centre gear detail: The A340-200/-300 has a two-wheel centre unit, while the longer and heavier -500/-600 uses a four-wheel centre bogie.
  • Proportions: The A340-600 looks exceptionally long and slender. The 777 appears broader, with much larger engine nacelles relative to the fuselage.

Which should you fly in a simulator?

Choose the 777 for high-capacity twin-engine operations and the A340 for four-engine procedures, Airbus automation and long-body handling.

  • Choose the 777 to practise ETOPS planning, twin-engine engine-out handling, Boeing mode logic and the performance of a high-thrust widebody.
  • Choose the A340 to manage four engine indications, Airbus sidestick and autothrust logic, and the slower acceleration associated with some heavily loaded variants.
  • Compare like with like: Use the same weather, payload, fuel policy and route. Take-off distance or fuel burn from unrelated add-ons is not reliable evidence about the real aircraft.

Is the Boeing 777 better than the Airbus A340?
