How does autoland work in a Boeing 777 flight simulator?

In a Boeing 777 flight simulator, autoland uses the ILS, multiple autopilot channels, autothrottle and radio-altimeter data to capture the approach, align with the runway, flare, touch down and track the centreline. It succeeds only if the aircraft model supports autoland, the ILS is valid and the approach is correctly configured.

What does the Boeing 777 autoland system do?

The 777 Automatic Flight Director System combines ILS guidance, three autopilot channels, radio-altimeter information, flight-control computers and autothrottle commands. The localiser controls lateral alignment; the glideslope controls the descent path.

In real 777 logic and faithfully modelled add-ons, pressing APP with one autopilot engaged arms the approach modes. Once the required capture conditions are met, the additional autopilot channels engage automatically and the system prepares its flare and rollout modes. Basic Boeing 777 simulator aircraft may track the ILS without modelling this complete sequence.

Autoland does not merge every landing system into one function. Speedbrakes, autobrakes and reverse thrust remain separately configured systems, and reverse thrust is normally selected by the pilot.

How do you set up a 777 autoland in a flight simulator?

A successful 777 autoland starts with a valid ILS approach and finishes with continuous monitoring of the flight-mode annunciator, or FMA.

  1. Confirm that the aircraft supports full autoland. Check its documentation for automatic flare and rollout support. A simplified or freeware 777 may capture LOC and G/S but disconnect at touchdown or omit multi-channel operation entirely.
  2. Select a runway with a usable ILS. Confirm the correct runway end, ILS frequency, identifier and inbound course. A localiser-only approach provides no glideslope and cannot support a normal ILS autoland.
  3. Programme the 777 FMC. Load the correct arrival and ILS approach, check for route discontinuities, enter the landing reference speed and select Flaps 25 or 30 according to the aircraft's performance guidance. Loading an approach into the FMC does not by itself arm autoland.
  4. Check the ILS tuning. Detailed 777 simulations commonly autotune the selected approach, while simpler aircraft may require manual tuning. Verify the frequency, course and displayed Morse identifier rather than trusting the runway name on the FMC.
  5. Intercept from below the glideslope. Establish a stable speed and use a shallow localiser intercept, normally no more than about 30 degrees.   6. Select APP and read the FMA. Confirm that LOC and G/S arm and then capture. A magenta FMC route, VNAV descent or apparent visual alignment with the runway is not proof of ILS capture.
  7. Complete the landing configuration. Extend the landing gear and selected flap, stabilise at the commanded approach speed, arm the speedbrake and choose an appropriate autobrake setting. Expect an acceptable LAND 3 or LAND 2 status, with FLARE and ROLLOUT armed as the aircraft descends.
  8. Monitor through touchdown. Keep your hands and feet ready but avoid moving noisy control axes. If the approach becomes unstable, the modes change unexpectedly or NO AUTOLAND appears, disconnect and land manually or go around. After touchdown, let ROLLOUT track the centreline, verify spoiler deployment and braking, apply reverse thrust if needed, then take control before leaving the runway.

Does the 777 FMC perform the autoland?

No. The 777 FMC can select the approach, supply reference data and manage ILS tuning, but the AFDS and autopilot channels fly the automatic landing.

On detailed products such as the PMDG 777, selecting a database ILS approach commonly allows the aircraft to autotune it. The frequency and front course should still be checked on the navigation-radio page and against the PFD indications. If manual 777 ILS tuning is required, enter the values supported by that aircraft model and confirm the correct identifier is received.

A mistake we see constantly is assuming that an approach displayed in the FMC must be available in the scenery. The aircraft's navigation database and the simulator airport can disagree after a runway renumbering or scenery update. That mismatch can produce an offset localiser, the wrong frequency or guidance aimed at an old threshold.

What do LAND 3, LAND 2 and NO AUTOLAND mean?

LAND 3 and LAND 2 describe the redundancy available to the 777 autoland system; they are not the runway's CAT II or CAT III classification.

  • LAND 3 indicates fail-operational, three-channel capability. A relevant single failure should leave sufficient redundancy to complete the automatic landing.
  • LAND 2 indicates reduced, generally fail-passive redundancy. Automatic landing capability may remain, but a subsequent failure can require pilot intervention. Whether the approach may continue depends on the applicable procedure and minima.
  • NO AUTOLAND means the required capability is unavailable. Do not rely on automatic flare, touchdown or rollout.

Read these indications together with the FMA. LAND 3 does not rescue an unstable approach, and LAND 2 is not automatically a failed landing. A status change, unexpected mode reversion or autopilot disconnect requires an immediate decision to take over or go around.

Why does PMDG 777 autoland fail or miss the runway?

Most PMDG 777 and other simulated 777 autoland failures come from incorrect ILS tuning, poor interception, conflicting controls or navigation-data mismatches rather than a defective autopilot.

For PMDG 777 autoland, do not copy a Boeing 737 habit of manually selecting additional autopilot channels unless the installed product documentation specifically requires it. Faithful 777 logic brings the remaining channels in automatically after APP selection and approach-mode capture. Exact bindings and panel controls can vary between simulator and product editions, so let the FMA and autoland status indications confirm what the aircraft is actually doing.

Does 777 autoland stop the aircraft automatically?

Not necessarily. Autoland can flare, touch down and provide centreline guidance during rollout, but stopping performance depends on the separately selected speedbrake, autobrake and reverse-thrust systems.

Arm the speedbrake before landing, select an autobrake level suitable for the runway and be prepared to operate reverse thrust manually. ROLLOUT is not a taxi mode: disconnect the autopilot and take steering control before turning off the runway.

Do you need an autoland app for a Boeing 777 simulator?

No separate autoland app is required. The capability must be built into the simulated aircraft's autopilot, flight-control and radio-navigation systems.

An electronic flight bag may help with performance or aircraft settings, but it cannot add triple-channel flare and rollout logic to a 777 that does not model them. Simulator AI landing assistance is also different from operating the aircraft's own autoland system. Emergency Autoland found in some modern general-aviation aircraft is a separate system and should not be confused with Boeing 777 ILS autoland.

Is simulated autoland the same as a real Boeing 777 autoland?

A detailed Boeing 777 flight simulator can reproduce the real sequence closely, but a home simulation does not reproduce every operational safeguard or legal requirement.

A real 777 autoland also depends on aircraft dispatch status, trained crew, approved procedures, weather and wind limits, runway condition, protected ILS signals and suitable airport equipment. Certified training simulators model these factors more rigorously than entertainment software. In both cases, the crew must monitor every mode and remain prepared to disconnect or go around; autoland is not an unattended landing system.
