How do I calibrate rudder pedals in X-Plane 12?

How do I calibrate rudder pedals in X-Plane 12?

X-Plane treats most USB rudder pedals as a joystick device, so calibration and axis assignment both take place on the Joystick settings screen.

  1. Connect the pedals before starting X-Plane. If their configuration software offers separate or combined brake modes, choose separate axes so X-Plane can control each toe brake independently.
  2. Open Settings > Joystick. Select the pedal unit rather than your yoke, stick or throttle. A generic device image is not a problem as long as the axis indicators respond.
  3. Start the device calibration. Move the rudder fully left and right several times. Press and release each toe brake separately through its complete range; pressing both together can leave one axis with an incomplete calibration.
  4. Set the neutral positions. Centre the rudder without holding pressure against either pedal and release both toe brakes completely. Brake axes are one-sided controls, so their neutral position is fully released rather than halfway through their travel.
  5. Assign the axes. Set the main pedal axis to Yaw, then map the physical left and right toe pedals to their corresponding brake axes. Leave unused or unidentified axes unassigned.
  6. Check the active control profile. Move every pedal while watching the input bars, then close the settings screen. X-Plane retains the assignments in the active profile, which may be associated with one aircraft or a group of aircraft.

Which X-Plane 12 axes should rudder pedals use?

A conventional three-axis pedal set needs one yaw assignment and two separate toe-brake assignments.

Pedals without toe brakes need only the Yaw assignment. Do not map the rudder axis to roll, nosewheel tiller or both yaw and tiller. Aircraft with a separate tiller may give the rudder pedals only limited nosewheel authority at low speed; that is aircraft behaviour, not failed calibration.

How should rudder pedal sensitivity be set?

Begin with a linear yaw response and add only enough adjustment to solve a specific control problem.

  • For centre jitter: add a small yaw dead zone, but first confirm that the hardware returns consistently to centre.
  • For twitchy steering: use a gentler response around the centre while retaining full rudder at the ends of travel.
  • For dragging brakes: create a small inactive region at the released end of the affected brake axis.
  • For limited travel: recalibrate rather than using a response curve to conceal an axis that never reaches its endpoints.

Detailed dead-zone and response-curve tuning for rudder pedals is best done only after the raw axes work correctly.

Why are the pedals reversed or the brakes stuck on?

Reversed axes, incomplete brake calibration and duplicate bindings cause most rudder-pedal problems in X-Plane 12.

  • Rudder moves the wrong way: enable the reverse-axis option for Yaw. Reverse only the affected axis.
  • A brake remains applied: reverse that toe-brake axis and recalibrate it, making sure the pedal is fully released when X-Plane records neutral.
  • Rudder flickers or fights your feet: inspect every connected controller for another Yaw assignment. A joystick twist grip is a common duplicate.
  • Assignments disappear between aircraft: check which control profile is active. The pedals may be configured correctly in a different profile.
  • No axis indicator moves: reconnect the pedals directly to the computer, restart X-Plane and check whether the operating system detects them. If no raw input appears outside the simulator, changing an X-Plane assignment will not fix it.
  • The indicators work but taxi steering is weak: check the aircraft's steering design. Some aircraft use a separate tiller, hydraulic pressure or limited pedal steering rather than full nosewheel movement from the yaw axis.

Do rudder pedals also need Windows calibration?

Usually not; X-Plane's own calibration is the one that defines the usable centre and endpoints inside the simulator.

Use operating-system or manufacturer calibration only when the raw input is already off-centre, noisy or unable to reach full travel before X-Plane processes it. After changing anything outside the simulator, run X-Plane's calibration again. Pedals with persistent brake-range problems can also be checked using the separate Windows toe-brake calibration process.
