How do you capture an airbase in DCS Liberation?

Ian Stephens
In short

Learn how to capture an airbase in DCS Liberation, why landing or bombing is not enough, and how to make the capture persist after the mission.

In DCS Liberation, capture an airbase by winning the ground campaign until friendly forces take its control point. Support the adjacent front, destroy defenders, and keep friendly units alive so they can advance into the capture area. Finish the sortie and accept the debrief; bombing or landing there does not change campaign ownership.

How does airbase capture work in DCS Liberation?

Airbases are campaign control points, so ownership is decided by ground forces rather than aircraft. The generated ground battle moves the front towards or away from the airbase according to the mission result. If the front begins some distance away, taking the base can require several campaign turns.

Once friendly campaign forces reach and take the control point, Liberation can change its coalition when the mission result is committed. This persistence is part of Liberation’s wider front-line and airfield-ownership system.

How do you take an enemy airbase step by step?

  1. Choose a reachable airbase. The normal target is an enemy control point connected to one of your control points by an active front line. A distant airfield will not be captured merely because you attack it from the air.
  2. Strengthen the attacking ground force. Purchase or transfer suitable ground units to the friendly control point. Where your Liberation build offers front-line postures, use an offensive posture rather than leaving the force set to defend.
  3. Plan air support for the ground battle. Use CAS against front-line armour and other missions against air defences, reinforcements or aircraft threatening the advance. An OCA runway strike can suppress enemy flying but does not capture the base.
  4. Protect the friendly advance. Destroy hostile ground units blocking the route and keep your own campaign units alive. The DCS F10 map controls and symbols can help you locate the airfield, front line and surviving units when the mission’s map settings permit it.
  5. Complete any direct capture task. If the mission provides a generated air-assault force, deploy its troops as instructed. If Combined Arms control is available, a Liberation-generated ground unit can be directed into the airfield’s capture area. The aircraft or helicopter itself does not count as an occupying ground unit.
  6. Commit the mission result. End the sortie normally and accept or apply the debrief result. Liberation does not retain the capture if you discard the result or restart the turn. Our explanation of the campaign-turn and debrief workflow covers that process in more detail.

Can you capture an airbase by landing or bombing it?

No. Landing, destroying parked aircraft or cratering the runway can support an attack, but none of those actions transfers campaign ownership without a successful ground capture.

Why did the airbase fail to change sides?

The most common reason is that the attack damaged the airfield without completing the ground objective. Check these failure points:

  • The front line was still too far away; one victory moved it forwards but did not reach the control point.
  • A hostile ground unit remained inside or near the capture area.
  • The friendly ground force was destroyed, immobilised or never entered the required area.
  • Troops created by an external script or unsupported mod changed the live DCS mission but were not recognised as campaign units.
  • The mission ended before the capture event occurred, or its debrief result was discarded.
  • The runway was closed, but the airbase itself was never occupied.

What happens after the airbase is captured?

After the accepted debrief, Liberation changes the control point’s coalition and recalculates the connected fronts for the next turn. The airbase may still need defending, repairing or provisioning before it becomes a useful operating location.

Runway damage does not disappear simply because ownership changed, and aircraft may need to be assigned or purchased through the campaign layer. Protect the new base immediately: enemy ground forces can retake it through the same control-point mechanics.
