Find current VFR charts for Romania from the official AIS/eAIP, then verify AIRAC dates, supplements and NOTAMs before flying.
Find current VFR charts for Romania through ROMATSA’s official Aeronautical Information Service (AIS Romania). For Aviation & Real-World Flying, use the active eAIP plus any listed VFR Manual or national chart, then verify its AIRAC effective date against AIP amendments, supplements and NOTAMs; a downloaded chart alone is not a complete briefing.
Where is the official Romanian VFR chart source?
ROMATSA’s AIS publication service is the primary operational source for Romanian aeronautical information. Search for AIS Romania ROMATSA eAIP and confirm that the publication identifies ROMATSA and Romania’s Aeronautical Information Service rather than opening an isolated PDF from search results.
The eAIP contains the structured national information, while the official publications area may also list a VFR Manual or dedicated VFR chart. Our guide to finding the official national chart publisher and checking chart coverage explains the same source hierarchy for other countries.
- Open the effective publication: choose the eAIP or VFR publication whose effective date covers the planned flight. A future AIRAC edition may already be available but must not be treated as active before its effective date.
- Find the en-route material: inspect the VFR publication and the eAIP chart index. In the standard AIP structure,
ENR 2describes airspace,ENR 5covers activities and hazards, andENR 6contains en-route charts. - Open each aerodrome entry: use
AD 2, especially its chart list, for aerodrome diagrams, visual approach information, reporting points, local routes and operating restrictions where published. - Apply later changes: check AIP Amendments and AIP Supplements, then obtain an appropriate NOTAM briefing. Temporary restricted areas, closures and changed frequencies may not appear on the base chart.
Which Romanian VFR publications do I need?
The correct set depends on the flight: a national chart supplies the overview, while the eAIP and aerodrome pages provide the detail needed near controlled airspace and airports.
| Planning task | Publication to use |
|---|---|
| Cross-country overview | Official VFR chart or VFR Manual, together with its legend and chart index |
| Controlled, restricted or danger airspace | ENR 2, ENR 5 and relevant ENR 6 charts |
| Arrival at an aerodrome | The aerodrome’s AD 2 entry and published visual or aerodrome charts |
| Temporary changes | AIP Supplements and NOTAMs applicable to the route and flight period |
Do not expect a Romanian publication to resemble a US sectional or contain every detail on one sheet. Frequencies, vertical limits and visual reporting procedures may be divided between the chart, its legend and the relevant AIP text. For unfamiliar symbols, use our chart-reading guide covering airspace, terrain and visual reporting points.
How do I know whether a Romanian VFR chart is current?
A Romanian chart is current only when its effective status and subsequent updates cover the intended flight date.
- Check the effective date: the date on which an AIRAC edition becomes operational matters more than the day on which the file was downloaded.
- Check the chart identifier and revision: compare them with the active publication index. An older-looking chart may remain valid if no replacement has been issued.
- Read amendments and supplements: permanent changes may be incorporated by amendment, while longer temporary changes commonly appear in an AIP Supplement.
- Brief the NOTAMs: short-notice restrictions, runway closures and unavailable navigation or communication facilities will not necessarily be drawn on the chart.
- Preserve print scale: do not measure from a PDF printed with “fit to page”. Use the stated scale or scale bar and the chart’s printing instructions.
A mistake we see constantly is treating a newly downloaded file as proof of currency. Portals can display both active and forthcoming cycles, and an old saved PDF can have the same general title as its replacement.
Are Romanian VFR charts free, and can sim pilots use them?
The official eAIP can be consulted online, but availability, printing and redistribution rights for a dedicated VFR chart depend on the terms attached to that publication. Free access does not automatically permit repackaging the chart with scenery, an aircraft or another download.
Simulator pilots can use the official material as a real-world reference. If the simulator’s scenery or navigation database represents an older date, expect mismatched taxiways, runway designators, frequencies or airspace; use the active chart for procedure study, but recognise the simulator’s data limitation. Our guidance on chart licensing and currency in flight simulators covers copying and redistribution in more detail.
For an actual flight, use aeronautical information acceptable under the applicable regulations and complete a proper pre-flight briefing. A VFR chart, even one verified against the active AIRAC cycle, does not replace weather, NOTAM, airspace-activation and aerodrome-status checks.
