Safe traffic-pattern exit sequence

The safest sequence is to brief the departure, establish a stable climb, look for conflicting traffic and only then turn away from the circuit.

  1. Brief the exit before take-off. Confirm the circuit direction, traffic pattern altitude, intended route, overlying airspace, terrain and any published noise-abatement procedure. Never assume every runway uses left traffic.
  2. State or request your intentions. At a towered airport, request the required departure direction and read back any assigned heading or restriction. At a non-towered airport, listen first, then announce the runway and whether you are departing straight out or in a particular direction.   3. Climb on the extended centreline. Hold the aircraft’s recommended climb speed, correct for drift and complete configuration changes according to the aircraft checklist. Do not rush the clean-up while still close to the ground; use the proper speed and climb criteria for retracting take-off flap.
  4. Clear the turn. Scan for aircraft on crosswind and downwind, traffic joining the circuit, straight-in arrivals and any opposite-direction movement. Radio calls help, but aircraft without radios, incorrect position reports and blocked transmissions remain possible.
  5. Make the approved exit. Follow the tower’s instruction or the published non-towered procedure. For the standard US 45-degree departure, pass the runway end and reach pattern altitude before turning left from left traffic or right from right traffic.
  6. Continue the departure. Establish the planned heading and climb while remaining outside the active circuit. Stay on the tower frequency until instructed to change, or until the applicable local procedure permits it.

Which direction should you turn when leaving the pattern?

At a towered airport, turn in the direction assigned by ATC; without a tower, use the published local procedure rather than immediately turning towards your destination.

A straight-out departure usually creates the least circuit conflict when the route, terrain and airspace permit it. If the destination lies on the opposite side, do not make a low turn across crosswind or downwind traffic; leave by the recognised route and manoeuvre only when safely clear.

How high should you climb before turning?

There is no universal turn altitude for every airport, aircraft and jurisdiction.

For the recommended non-towered US 45-degree exit, satisfy both conditions: be beyond the departure end of the runway and at pattern altitude. A tower may approve an earlier turn, but the pilot still remains responsible for aircraft performance, terrain and obstacle clearance; say unable if an instruction cannot be flown safely.

Confirm the altitude datum as well as the number. A published altitude may be expressed above mean sea level using the local altimeter setting, while circuit height may be given above aerodrome level or flown using QFE. Pattern altitude is not automatically a 1,000-foot indication on the altimeter.

What traffic should you check before leaving?

Before turning out, check every route that could place another aircraft near your departure path.

  • Aircraft ahead that are turning crosswind or making a touch-and-go.
  • Downwind traffic at or near pattern altitude.
  • Aircraft joining on a 45-degree entry or through an overhead procedure.
  • Straight-in, circling or opposite-direction arrivals.
  • Helicopters, gliders and ultralights using a different circuit or altitude.

High-wing and low-wing aircraft each create blind areas during a climbing turn. Clear the intended side before banking, keep looking through the turn and avoid becoming occupied with GPS programming or radio changes.

Common traffic-pattern exit mistakes

Most unsafe exits begin with an unbriefed low turn or an incomplete lookout rather than the choice between straight-out and 45-degree departure.

  • Turning immediately towards the destination: remain on the departure leg until the applicable turn point instead of cutting through the active circuit.
  • Assuming left traffic: verify the chart, windsock indicators and local information because right-hand circuits are common where terrain, noise or airspace requires them.
  • Levelling unnecessarily at pattern altitude: on a straight-out exit, continue climbing when clearance and overlying airspace allow rather than remaining in the departure corridor at circuit height.
  • Relying on the radio: treat broadcasts as supporting information, not proof that the airspace is clear.
  • Changing frequency too soon: remain contactable while under tower control and until clear of the local traffic operation.
