Can you use an external GPU with X-Plane on Mac?

Which Macs support an external GPU for X-Plane?

Use a GPU explicitly supported by the installed macOS release and by the enclosure’s size and power limits. For the macOS versions relevant to X-Plane 12, that normally means a compatible AMD GPU; NVIDIA cards lack the required macOS driver support.

How do I make X-Plane use the external GPU?

Connect the eGPU directly through Thunderbolt, route the simulator display through it and then confirm which Metal device X-Plane selected.

  1. Confirm the Mac is Intel-based. If the processor is an Apple M-series chip, stop here because macOS will not expose the eGPU for graphics acceleration.
  2. Check the Thunderbolt connection. Connect the enclosure directly to a Thunderbolt 3 port using a suitable Thunderbolt cable, rather than through an ordinary USB hub or dock.
  3. Connect the display to the eGPU. Plug the monitor used for X-Plane into the graphics card’s HDMI or DisplayPort output. Rendering on the eGPU and sending the image back to a MacBook’s internal screen consumes additional Thunderbolt bandwidth.
  4. Set the application preference. With X-Plane closed, select the exact X-Plane application in Finder, open its information panel and enable “Prefer External GPU” if macOS offers the option. Some display-routed configurations select the eGPU automatically.
  5. Use the Metal renderer. X-Plane 12 uses Metal on macOS. In X-Plane 11 releases that offer a choice between Metal and the older OpenGL path, use Metal unless a legacy add-on requires otherwise.

The external-GPU preference applies to the particular application bundle you selected. A common mistake is changing the preference on one X-Plane installation, then launching a demo, backup or second copy elsewhere on the Mac.

Will an eGPU improve X-Plane frame rates?

An eGPU improves X-Plane only when graphics processing or graphics memory is the main bottleneck and the external card is substantially faster than the Mac’s internal GPU.

Enable X-Plane’s frame-rate data output and compare the CPU and GPU frame times; lower values are better. If GPU time is consistently higher than CPU time, reducing resolution, anti-aliasing or shadows should also produce a noticeable improvement. That is a good sign that a faster GPU could help.

Thunderbolt adds bandwidth and latency overhead, so an external card does not perform exactly like the same GPU installed internally in a desktop computer. We recommend working through the broader X-Plane frame-rate checks before buying hardware. If high-resolution scenery or texture settings are the problem, also check how resolution, textures and add-ons consume VRAM.

An eGPU makes the most sense when you already own a Thunderbolt 3 Intel Mac, can connect the main simulator display directly to the enclosure and have confirmed a GPU bottleneck. It is a poor purchase for an Apple silicon Mac, a CPU-limited installation or an Intel Mac whose internal graphics are already close to the proposed external card.

Why is X-Plane not using the eGPU?

X-Plane usually misses an eGPU because macOS has not recognised the enclosure, the wrong application copy was configured or the display remains attached to another GPU.

  • No external-GPU preference appears: confirm that the Mac is Intel-based, the port is Thunderbolt 3 and the enclosure is visible to macOS. USB-C alone is insufficient.
  • Log.txt names the internal GPU: close X-Plane, enable the external-GPU preference on the application actually being launched, and connect the primary simulator monitor to the eGPU.
  • Multiple monitors perform badly: where practical, connect all X-Plane displays to the same external card. Splitting the simulator across internal and external GPUs can introduce extra transfers and uneven frame pacing.
  • FPS does not improve: compare CPU and GPU frame times. A faster graphics card cannot remove a processor bottleneck caused by object density, traffic, aircraft systems or CPU-heavy plugins.
  • X-Plane crashes or shows a black screen: confirm that the enclosure can power the installed card, use a direct Thunderbolt connection and test X-Plane without third-party plugins or overlays. Do not disconnect the eGPU while X-Plane is running.
