How do I use the controls in X-Plane Mobile?

X-Plane Mobile uses device tilt for pitch and roll by default, with touchscreen controls for throttle, rudder, brakes, flaps, trim and cockpit switches. Calibrate the device in your normal flying position, make small movements, and trim the aircraft once stable. The exact on-screen layout varies by aircraft and app version.

What do the X-Plane Mobile controls do?

The basic controls operate like those in a desktop simulator, but pitch and roll are usually assigned to the device’s motion sensors.

How do I calibrate X-Plane Mobile’s tilt controls?

Calibrate the tilt controls before taxiing, with the phone or tablet held exactly as you intend to hold it during the flight.

  1. Choose a comfortable position. Support your hands or device so you can reproduce the same neutral angle without strain.
  2. Open the control or calibration options. The wording and location can differ between app versions.
  3. Hold the device still. Record the neutral position without twisting or leaning it to one side.
  4. Test both axes. Make small pitch and roll movements and check that the virtual controls respond in the expected direction.
  5. Adjust sensitivity gradually. If your version provides sensitivity or stability settings, change one setting at a time rather than moving every slider at once.

Calibration only defines the device’s neutral position. It cannot correct an untrimmed aircraft, crosswind, asymmetric thrust or propeller effects. A mistake we see constantly is recalibrating when the real fix is a few taps of trim.

How do I take off, turn and land with mobile controls?

Successful mobile flying depends on small tilt movements, smooth power changes and regular trimming rather than large steering inputs.

  1. Before moving, confirm that the throttle is idle, the controls respond correctly and the parking brake releases.
  2. Apply power progressively. Keep the aircraft on the centreline with rudder or the available ground-steering control.
  3. Rotate gently. At the correct speed for the aircraft, use a small nose-up input rather than sharply tilting the device.
  4. Set the climb attitude. Return the device near neutral and adjust pitch for the required airspeed. Trim once the speed and attitude have settled.
  5. Roll into turns carefully. Tilt to establish the bank, use a small opposite input to stop the roll, then return to neutral. Add slight back-pressure if needed to avoid losing altitude.
  6. Configure early for landing. Reduce power, extend gear and flaps within their limits, and retrim after each change. Flare with a small pitch increase, close the throttle and brake only after the aircraft is firmly down.

Why are my controls too sensitive or not responding?

Most X-Plane Mobile control problems come from poor calibration, lack of trim, an engaged autopilot or two inputs assigned to the same axis.

  • The aircraft keeps banking: apply opposite roll input until the wings are level, then return to neutral. Neutral controls do not make the aeroplane self-level.
  • The nose rises or falls constantly: stabilise the airspeed and use pitch trim. Recalibrate only if the virtual control remains displaced while the device is held neutral.
  • The aircraft veers during take-off: use rudder and feed in power more slowly. Banking is not an effective substitute for ground steering.
  • Manual input appears ineffective: check whether the autopilot is engaged. The flight director displays guidance, but the autopilot actually controls the aircraft.
  • Inputs jump or fight each other: look for duplicate axis assignments, especially when an external controller remains connected while tilt control is active.
  • Nothing responds: confirm the simulation is not paused, the intended control mode is selected and calibration has completed.

Touching cockpit switches and changing the view

Cockpit switches normally respond to taps, while levers and rotary controls require a drag or the adjustment gesture shown by that aircraft. Zoom in before operating a small knob; otherwise, the app may interpret the movement as a camera gesture or select the neighbouring control.

Begin camera drags on an empty part of the cockpit rather than on a switch. A control that still refuses to move may be guarded, dependent on electrical power or non-functional in that particular aircraft.

External controllers

A supported gamepad, joystick or yoke can replace tilt input for pitch and roll, while the touchscreen remains useful for instruments and cockpit switches.
