How do you fly a circling approach and circle to land?
Learn the circle-to-land procedure, including circling minima, aircraft category, protected area, runway positioning and missed approach rules.
A circling approach is an IFR instrument approach followed by a visual manoeuvre to a runway not suitable for a straight-in landing. Fly the published approach to circling minima, maintain the required visual reference, remain inside the aircraft category’s protected area, and descend from MDA only when a normal landing is assured; otherwise go missed.

What is a circling approach?
A circling approach combines a published instrument approach with visual manoeuvring to a different runway, the opposite end of the approached runway or a runway lacking straight-in minima. The instrument portion might be an ILS, RNAV, VOR or another approach type; the visual portion is the circle-to-land manoeuvre.
Some procedures, often those with titles such as VOR-A, publish only circling minima because the final approach course does not meet straight-in alignment or descent criteria. Circling can also be requested when a straight-in procedure exists but wind, runway availability or traffic makes another runway preferable.
A circle-to-land is not the same as a visual approach or an ordinary VFR circuit. The aircraft remains on an IFR clearance, uses published circling minima and must remain inside a protected manoeuvring area. At a controlled airport, an approach clearance also does not replace a landing clearance. ATC may specify the landing runway and a direction such as “circle west”, but that instruction cannot override a charted prohibited sector or make an unsafe manoeuvre acceptable.
Does a plane circling an airport always mean a circling approach?
A plane circling an airport is not necessarily flying a circling approach. It might be in a normal traffic circuit, an instrument hold, an ATC delay orbit, a training exercise or a weather-avoidance turn. A true circling approach follows an instrument procedure and uses published circling minima before visual manoeuvring to land.
Which circling minima and aircraft category should you use?
Use the published circling MDA and visibility for the applicable aircraft category, never the straight-in DA, MDA or visibility for another runway. If the chart has no circling line, or states CIRCLING NA, that procedure does not authorise circling.
Aircraft approach category is normally determined from Vref, when specified, or 1.3 Vso/Vat at the maximum certificated landing mass under the applicable system. Do not select a lower category simply because the aircraft is lightly loaded that day.

Under commonly used US rules, if the planned circling speed exceeds the upper limit of the aircraft’s category, higher-category minima must be used. ICAO/PANS-OPS designs also apply category-specific manoeuvring speeds, but those limits are not identical to the category reference-speed bands above. Use the chart, state rules and operator policy; if the required higher-category minima are not published, do not fly the circle.
- Circling MDA: This is a hard altitude floor until the requirements for descent to landing are met. MDA is normally shown above mean sea level; the associated HAA or MDH describes height above the aerodrome or relevant datum.
- Visibility: Published visibility is a legal minimum, not a target. Night, precipitation, high terrain, an unfamiliar airport or poor runway contrast may justify substantially more.
- Ceiling: A reported ceiling is usually stated above ground level, so do not compare it directly with an MDA expressed above mean sea level. Use HAA/MDH where a ceiling requirement or operational check applies.
- Restrictions: Check for runway-specific limits, prohibited sectors, night restrictions, remote-altimeter notes and required altitude corrections.
When circling from an ILS, do not follow the glideslope through circling MDA towards the lower straight-in decision altitude. Level at or above the circling MDA and begin the visual manoeuvre only when its requirements are satisfied. What is the circling protected area?
The circling protected area is the obstacle-assessed region in which the aircraft may manoeuvre at or above circling MDA. Its size depends on aircraft category and the procedure-design system; it is not a universal ring or a fixed downwind distance.
Older US standard-area diagrams use the following nominal radii around runway thresholds, joined to form the circling area:

Those figures explain many training diagrams, but they are not a universal planning table. Revised US criteria use altitude-dependent radii and are identified on the chart, while ICAO/PANS-OPS and national systems use different dimensions and assumptions. The boundary is rarely visible from the cockpit and normally is not drawn as a usable geofence on a simulator moving map.
Obstacle protection depends on remaining within the applicable area, at or above MDA, at an appropriate category speed and using normal manoeuvring. It does not protect a low, wide downwind, an extended base leg or a turn through a sector marked as unavailable. ATC cannot provide circling protection in a charted NA sector merely by issuing an instruction to use it.
How close should you stay to the runway?
There is no single correct downwind spacing for a circling approach; keep the pattern compact enough to remain in the protected area without forcing a steep final turn. Judge the geometry from runway position, groundspeed, wind and aircraft handling rather than a fixed timer.
A mistake we see repeatedly in simulators is flying a wide airline-style visual circuit after breaking out. A tailwind on downwind or base can enlarge the ground track even though indicated airspeed looks correct. If recovering the geometry requires excessive bank, a rushed descent or loss of sight of the required visual references, go missed rather than tightening the circle close to the ground.
How do you fly the circle-to-land procedure?
The safe circling approach procedure is to brief the instrument approach, minima, visual geometry and missed approach before the final approach fix, then fly a controlled level manoeuvre inside the protected area.
- Confirm that circling is authorised: Check the circling minima, aircraft category, landing runway, visibility, prohibited sectors, night restrictions, terrain and any operational limitations. Verify that the weather provides enough margin for the entire manoeuvre, not merely a brief view of the airport.
- Brief the missed approach first: Identify the missed-approach point, initial track, altitude, turn restrictions and navigation source. Decide what the automation and flight director will do if a go-around is initiated from downwind or base rather than from the published final course.
- Choose the intended circle: Plan the direction and approximate downwind, base and final geometry using the chart, wind, local traffic direction and ATC instructions. A charted sector restriction takes priority over the most convenient circuit.
- Configure and slow early: Arrive at circling MDA in a stable level-flight configuration at a speed compatible with the minima being used. Include gust additives and anticipate the resulting groundspeed; do not discover on base that the aircraft is effectively flying a higher-category track.
- Fly the published instrument segments: Observe the final course, step-down fixes and altitude restrictions. Reaching circling MDA does not cancel the lateral requirements of the approach or authorise an early turn into unprotected terrain.
- Identify the landing runway positively: Confirm runway numbers, threshold position, orientation and lighting. Seeing some part of the aerodrome is not enough when parallel runways, taxiways, roads or offset thresholds could be mistaken for the landing surface.
- Begin visual manoeuvring from a suitable position: The circle does not always have to begin at the missed-approach point, but the required visual reference must be available and the aircraft must be able to remain within the protected area. Do not turn off the final course simply because the airport appeared briefly through cloud.
- Remain at or above circling MDA: Fly a compact pattern, correct continuously for wind and keep the runway environment or other required visual reference identifiable under the applicable rules. Avoid heads-down FMS changes during this low-level manoeuvre.
- Turn final without forcing the aeroplane: Start the base-to-final turn using actual runway geometry and groundspeed. An overshoot that needs excessive bank, aggressive rudder or a diving correction is a missed approach, not an invitation to salvage the landing.
- Descend only when landing is assured: Leave MDA once the required visibility and visual-reference conditions are met and the aircraft is continuously positioned for a normal descent and landing using normal manoeuvres. Stabilise according to the aircraft or operator criteria; otherwise go around.
When can you descend below circling MDA?
Descend below circling MDA only when the required visual references remain identifiable, the prescribed flight visibility exists and a continuous normal descent to the intended runway can be made. Being abeam the threshold or turning base is not, by itself, permission to descend.
Remain at or above MDA if the aircraft is too high, too wide, uncertain of its position or likely to require an abnormal bank angle or descent rate. National regulations differ over the exact visual references and allowances for momentary obstruction by the wing or cockpit structure, so brief the rule set being simulated rather than relying on a generic memory aid.
Execute a missed approach when:
- The required visual reference is lost in cloud, rain, haze or darkness.
- The landing runway can no longer be identified positively.
- Wind drift may have carried the aircraft outside the protected area.
- The base-to-final turn overshoots or requires excessive bank.
- A normal descent and stabilised landing are no longer possible.
- Traffic, runway occupancy, windshear or an ATC instruction prevents landing.
What if visual contact is lost during the circle?
If visual contact is lost after circling has begun, initiate the missed approach immediately and use the jurisdiction-specific circling missed-approach procedure. Under commonly applied procedures, this starts with a climbing turn towards the landing runway, continuing as needed to become established on the published missed-approach track.
If the miss occurs while still established on the instrument final course before its missed-approach point, begin the climb as required but do not make an unauthorised early turn; continue to the point from which the published missed approach may be flown. After leaving that course, never turn directly towards the holding fix from an arbitrary low-level position, because that shortcut may leave protected airspace.

Common circling approach failures in flight simulators
Most simulator circle-to-land failures come from incorrect minima, unsuitable automation modes or a pattern that quietly expands beyond the protected area.

The decisive rule is simple: circling minima and the protected area create room to manoeuvre, not an obligation to land. If the visual picture, wind or aircraft position stops supporting a normal approach, the correct circle-to-land procedure ends with a missed approach.
