FSX DX10 Scenery Fixer is a third-party tool that repairs many rendering faults in Microsoft Flight Simulator X’s unfinished DX10 Preview mode. You need it only if you intend to fly in DX10 Preview and encounter its compatibility problems; it is unnecessary in normal DX9 mode and is not a general performance upgrade.
What does FSX DX10 Scenery Fixer actually do?
Usually called Steve’s DX10 Scenery Fixer, the utility installs corrected shaders and manages DX10-specific rendering options in FSX and FSX: Steam Edition. Microsoft labelled the simulator’s DirectX 10 renderer as a preview because it was never finished to the same compatibility level as the default DirectX 9 renderer.
The Fixer can address DX10-related defects such as:
- Flashing or incorrectly rendered airport surfaces.
- Broken transparency on vegetation, fences, propeller discs and other alpha-blended textures.
- Black, opaque or invisible parts on some older aircraft and scenery.
- Certain shadow, lighting and material problems caused by the original DX10 shaders.

The Fixer does not convert an old FS2004 model into a native FSX model, replace missing texture files or guarantee compatibility with every add-on. Some legacy aircraft and scenery use material techniques that remain unreliable under DX10.
Do you need DX10 Scenery Fixer?
You need the Fixer only when DX10 Preview is part of your chosen FSX setup and the unmodified renderer produces visible faults.

A modern graphics card does not make the Fixer compulsory. Hardware support for DirectX 10 and FSX add-on compatibility are separate issues.
How can you tell whether DX10 is causing the problem?
The most reliable test is to compare the same aircraft, airport, time and weather in DX10 Preview and DX9.
- Record the fault. Note exactly what is black, transparent, missing or flashing.
- Disable Preview DirectX 10. Use FSX’s graphics settings, then restart the simulator so the renderer and shaders reload properly.
- Repeat the same flight. Avoid changing scenery settings, aircraft or weather during the comparison.
- Compare the result. If the problem disappears in DX9, a DX10 compatibility correction may help. If it remains, investigate the add-on installation, texture files, scenery conflicts or graphics configuration instead.
Missing files are often mistaken for a DX10 fault. If an object is untextured in both renderers, use our checks for missing and incorrectly installed FSX textures before changing shaders.
Will DX10 Scenery Fixer improve FSX performance?
The Fixer should not be treated as an FPS booster. DX10 Preview can change smoothness, graphics-card load and visual behaviour on a particular system, but there is no universal performance gain.
Install it to correct DX10 rendering, not to cure low frame rates, stutters or exhausted FSX memory. Those problems usually require changes to scenery density, autogen, traffic, aircraft complexity or add-on selection.
What should you check before installing it?
DX10 shader changes need to be handled carefully because outdated or overlapping modifications can create new visual faults.
- Use the correct FSX installation. Boxed FSX and Steam Edition can use different paths, especially when both are installed on one computer.
- Remove conflicting shader modifications. Do not combine unrelated DX10 shader packages unless their documentation explicitly supports it.
- Keep a recovery path. Back up the relevant configuration and use the Fixer’s supported restore or uninstall process rather than deleting shader files at random.

Once you have decided that DX10 is appropriate for your add-on collection, follow the dedicated DX10 Fixer installation and configuration procedure. If you prefer maximum compatibility with older aircraft and scenery, leave DX10 Preview disabled and continue using FSX’s default DX9 renderer.
