Use 2x or 4x MSAA in X-Plane 12 when your GPU has enough headroom: it keeps cockpit text and geometry clearer than FXAA. Choose FXAA when MSAA causes low frame rates or unstable frame times. FXAA is much cheaper, but it softens the whole image and controls fine-edge shimmer less effectively.
FXAA vs MSAA: what changes in X-Plane 12?
FXAA processes the completed frame, while MSAA takes additional samples around polygon edges as X-Plane renders them. That difference determines both image quality and GPU cost.

FXAA detects contrast in the finished picture, so it can affect text and textures as well as unwanted stair-stepping. MSAA leaves texture detail sharper, but its extra samples increase GPU work and memory bandwidth use. Available levels can differ between X-Plane builds and hardware platforms.
Which anti-aliasing setting should I use?
Start with 2x MSAA, then try 4x MSAA if the simulator remains GPU-stable in the heaviest conditions you normally fly.
- At 1080p or 1440p: MSAA usually produces a visibly cleaner result than FXAA. Try 2x first and move to 4x only if frame times remain comfortable.
- At 4K or high pixel density: FXAA or 2x MSAA may be enough because the display resolution already reduces visible stair-stepping.
- In VR: 2x MSAA is a sensible starting point because cockpit clarity matters, but maintaining the headset's frame cadence takes priority over 4x or higher levels.
- When GPU-limited: use FXAA. If X-Plane is CPU-limited, lowering MSAA may produce little or no frame-rate gain.

How do I compare FXAA and MSAA properly?
Compare the settings in the same demanding flight, changing only anti-aliasing between runs.
- Use a repeatable scene. Load the same aircraft at a detailed airport, with identical weather, time and cockpit view.
- Keep rendering resolution fixed. Changing resolution or an upscaling option at the same time makes the comparison meaningless.
- Begin with 2x MSAA. Inspect instrument lettering, diagonal window frames, wing edges, runway markings and distant buildings.
- Watch movement, not just screenshots. Pan the camera and taxi along the runway because unstable edges and shimmer are easier to see in motion.
- Check GPU frame time. Use X-Plane's frame-rate data output and compare GPU time rather than relying only on average FPS. Test 4x MSAA, then FXAA, and retain the sharpest option that stays stable.
A common mistake we see is testing at an empty rural airfield and selecting the maximum MSAA level. The lost performance appears later around complex terminals, clouds or dense scenery. Leave enough GPU margin for those conditions.
Why does scenery still shimmer with MSAA?
MSAA cannot remove every source of shimmer because it mainly targets polygon edges, not all textures, shadows, reflections or shader effects.
Runway markings, fences, vegetation, distant roof detail and bright specular highlights may still flicker as the viewpoint moves. Raising rendering resolution can help more than increasing MSAA in these cases, while lowering resolution or using aggressive upscaling usually makes the instability more obvious.

What should I lower if MSAA hurts performance?
Drop from 4x to 2x MSAA before abandoning MSAA for FXAA; this often preserves much of the edge quality at a lower GPU cost.
If the GPU is still the limiting component, switch to FXAA or reduce another GPU-heavy graphics setting.
