How do you identify a VOR station by Morse code?

To identify a VOR station, tune its published frequency in the NAV receiver, enable that receiver’s audio, listen to the repeating dot-and-dash ident, and compare it letter by letter with the Morse code printed beside the VOR on the chart. If it does not match, do not use the station.

In real-world aviation and in flight simulators, a VOR normally has a three-letter identifier. Those letters belong to the navigation aid and are not necessarily the nearby airport’s code. VOR Morse identification procedure

The reliable method is to compare at least two complete repetitions of the received Morse identifier with the published pattern.

  1. Find the published identifier. On an en-route chart or approach plate, locate the VOR’s name, frequency, three-letter ident and printed dot-and-dash pattern. Use the VOR information box rather than guessing from an airport code.
  2. Tune the correct NAV receiver. Enter the frequency into NAV1 or NAV2 and make sure it is transferred from standby to active. Check every digit; a nearby frequency can select a completely different aid.
  3. Enable NAV audio. Select the corresponding NAV1 or NAV2 audio source and raise its ident or audio volume. On many aircraft, the CDI source and audio-monitor selection are separate, so selecting VLOC or NAV on the instrument does not necessarily enable the sound.
  4. Listen for a complete cycle. The audio may begin halfway through the identifier. Wait for the longer pause, then listen to the entire sequence at least twice.
  5. Compare each letter. Match the short and long tones exactly with the Morse pattern printed on the chart. Similar-sounding rhythms are not close enough; all letters must agree.

What do VOR Morse code tones sound like?

A dot is a short tone and a dash is a tone about three times as long, with brief gaps separating the elements and longer gaps separating letters.

For example, a hypothetical ident ABC would be .- -... -.-.: “di-dah, dah-di-di-dit, dah-di-dah-dit”. You do not have to memorise the Morse alphabet if the chart prints the pattern; compare its rhythm directly with the received tones.

Can a cockpit text ident replace listening?

A displayed identifier is sufficient confirmation only when you know the avionics have decoded it from the received radio signal and the applicable operating procedure permits that method.

Some real receivers and simulator avionics decode the transmitted Morse automatically. Others display a database label as soon as a frequency is selected, even when the aircraft is out of range. A database-derived label tells you what the frequency is expected to represent; it does not prove that a usable VOR signal has been received. When the equipment’s behaviour is uncertain, check the audible ident.

Why is the VOR identifier missing or wrong?

A missing or mismatched ident usually means the wrong frequency or audio source is selected, the station is out of range, or the chart and simulator use different navigation data.

  • No sound at all: verify that the frequency is active rather than in standby, select the matching NAV audio source and check its volume.
  • A weak or intermittent ident: VOR reception is line-of-sight. Low altitude, terrain or excessive distance can prevent reliable reception.
  • Only voice is heard: some facilities also carry voice information. Continue listening for the coded ident rather than treating unrelated speech as station confirmation.
  • The Morse code identifies another station: recheck the frequency and chart. Frequencies can be reused at sufficiently separated locations, so never force a received code to fit the station you expected.

In real-world flying, an absent normal ident, a maintenance or test indication, or any unresolved mismatch means the VOR must be treated as unavailable. In a simulator, the safe training habit is the same: stop relying on that station until the frequency, signal source and identifier agree.
