To drive a steam locomotive in Train Sim World, release the brakes, open the cylinder cocks, select forward cutoff with the reverser, then ease open the regulator. Close the cylinder cocks after moving and shorten the cutoff as speed rises. Keep watching boiler pressure, water level, fire condition and the brake gauge.
How do you start a steam locomotive in Train Sim World?
A reliable start requires working steam pressure, clear cylinders, the correct direction and fully released brakes. Most Train Sim World services hand over the locomotive already in steam, although the exact cab layout, brake equipment and automated duties vary between add-ons.
- Check the boiler: Confirm that boiler pressure is in its normal working region and water is visible in the gauge glass. If pressure is low, restore the fire and draught or wait for the automatic fireman rather than forcing the locomotive to move.
- Open the cylinder cocks: This lets condensed water escape from the cylinders. Water cannot be compressed safely and, in the simulation, open cocks also reduce available cylinder power.
- Select the direction: Move the reverser into forward gear. A medium-to-long cutoff, often around half gear, is suitable for a light or level start; use longer gear for a heavy train or rising gradient.
- Release every brake: Release the train brake, locomotive brake and handbrake. On a vacuum-fitted train, use the ejector or release position and wait for the vacuum gauge to rise before assuming the whole train is free.
- Open the regulator gently: Admit a small amount of steam, let the couplings take up and increase the opening progressively. A sudden large application can cause violent wheel slip.
- Close the cylinder cocks: Shut them after the condensate has cleared, normally within the first few wheel revolutions. Leaving them open wastes steam and limits power.
- Shorten the cutoff: As speed builds, move the reverser towards the centre while maintaining a useful regulator opening. Watch pressure and acceleration rather than chasing one fixed percentage.

What do the steam locomotive controls do?
The regulator controls how much steam reaches the cylinders, while the reverser controls direction and how long steam is admitted during each piston stroke. Treating both as ordinary throttles is a mistake we see constantly.

How should you use the regulator and cutoff?
Start in relatively long cutoff, then shorten it progressively as the locomotive accelerates. Long cutoff produces strong starting effort but consumes steam quickly; short cutoff uses expanding steam more efficiently once the train is moving.
For steady running, a useful regulator opening with shorter cutoff is generally better than a nearly closed regulator with the reverser left in full gear. Depending on the locomotive, load and gradient, cruising cutoff may fall into roughly the 15–30 per cent range, but boiler pressure and speed are better guides than a universal number.
Lengthen the cutoff and add regulator before speed collapses on a climb. If boiler pressure continues falling, the locomotive is using steam faster than it can generate it, so reduce power until the fire recovers. To change direction, stop completely, close the regulator and secure the train before moving the reverser through neutral.
When the driving wheels slip, close the regulator promptly, reduce the requested effort and apply sand if the locomotive provides it. Reopen the regulator gradually; leaving it wide open usually prolongs the slip and wastes steam.
How do you manage boiler pressure, fire and water?
Keep the boiler healthy by balancing steam demand, fire condition, draught and injector use. Driving harder than the boiler can sustain eventually leaves the locomotive short of pressure even if the regulator is fully open.
- If pressure is falling: Reduce steam demand, check that the fire is adequate and increase damper or blower use where appropriate. Adding a large amount of cold coal at once can temporarily weaken steam production.
- If pressure is at the limit: Ease the firing rate or draught. Safety valves lifting is not an emergency, but it indicates that excess steam is being discarded.
- If water is low: Use an injector before the level disappears from the gauge glass. Injected water cools the boiler, so expect a temporary pressure reduction.
- If water appears high: Reduce injector use. An overfull boiler can impair steam quality, while gradients can make the gauge-glass level change even when the actual quantity has not changed suddenly.
- When coasting or stationary: The exhaust is no longer creating strong draught, so the blower may be needed to maintain the fire. Reduce it again when the regulator is supplying sufficient exhaust draught.
With manual firing, add coal little and often and anticipate hills rather than reacting after pressure has collapsed. Steam firing assistance and the controls exposed to the player differ between locomotives and Train Sim World editions.
Should beginners use automatic firing?
Use automatic firing while learning the regulator, cutoff and brakes, then switch to manual duties if the locomotive supports them and you want the extra workload. Keeping the HUD visible at first also helps connect boiler pressure, wheel slip and brake indications with the physical cab gauges.
How do you brake a steam train smoothly?
Brake earlier than you would in a modern multiple unit because vacuum brakes respond and release comparatively slowly. Close the regulator, make a modest train-brake application, pause to judge its effect and increase it only as required.
On a vacuum system, high vacuum normally corresponds to released brakes; applying the brake destroys vacuum and lowers the gauge reading. Releasing again takes time because the ejector must recreate vacuum along the train. Some locomotives use different or additional brake equipment, so follow the fitted gauges rather than assuming every steam cab behaves identically.
Use the train brake for a coupled consist and reserve the locomotive brake mainly for light-engine movement, holding the engine or refining a very slow stop. Do not use reverse gear as a substitute for normal braking.
Why is the steam locomotive not moving?
The usual causes are unreleased brakes, insufficient vacuum, a neutral reverser or too little boiler pressure. Check the controls in a fixed order rather than repeatedly opening the regulator.
- The train, locomotive or handbrake is still applied.
- Vacuum has not finished building through the train.
- The reverser is in neutral or set to very short cutoff.
- The regulator is closed, or an input binding is overriding it.
- Boiler pressure is too low for the load and gradient.
- The cylinder cocks remain open, reducing available power.
- The wheels are slipping because too much power was applied.
- The cab has not been activated after spawning in Free Roam.
