An ILS critical area is protected ground around the localiser and glideslope antennas where aircraft or vehicles could disturb the radio signals. Keeping it clear prevents false course or glidepath guidance, especially during low-visibility approaches, when even a brief signal bend can prompt an unsafe correction near the runway.
In Aviation & Real-World Flying, critical refers to signal integrity. It is not an obstacle-clearance zone, blast-protection area or radiation warning. Most installations have separately defined localiser and glideslope areas, shaped around the antenna locations and airport layout rather than a universal distance.
How does traffic interfere with an ILS signal?
Large metal objects can reflect, block or re-radiate part of an ILS transmission. The airborne receiver compares overlapping signal patterns; if an aircraft, service vehicle or building distorts those patterns, the receiver may indicate that the aeroplane is off course or above or below the glidepath when it is not.
The result can be a wandering needle, sudden displacement, warning flag or an inappropriate autopilot roll or pitch command. The indication may return to normal as soon as the interfering object moves, making the event easy to mistake for an aircraft fault. Interference is most hazardous close to touchdown and during low-visibility operations, when there is little time to reject a bad indication visually. It is especially significant during coupled approaches and automatic landings, although flight crews must still monitor the raw localiser and glideslope indications. What is the difference between an ILS critical and sensitive area?
A critical area and a sensitive area protect the same guidance system but represent different levels of interference risk.

Terminology and markings vary between authorities and airports. Some operational documents use “ILS critical area” informally for the whole protected region. Pilots should therefore use the airport chart, surface signs, markings and ATC instructions rather than trying to estimate the boundary from a generic diagram.
When is the ILS critical area protected?
The ILS critical area is protected according to national and local procedures, weather conditions, approach category and the status of the installation. There is no single worldwide visibility threshold that applies at every airport.
ATC may hold taxiing aircraft farther from the runway, delay runway crossings or increase spacing between movements while an arriving aircraft relies on the ILS. In better visibility, traffic may sometimes be permitted through an area while the ILS remains available because pilots have adequate visual references. That does not make its signs or markings optional.
A mistake we see often is assuming that no visible aircraft on short final means the area is safe to enter. The arrival may be hidden by weather or terrain, and the controller's spacing may depend on the protected zone remaining clear.
What should pilots do at an ILS holding position?
Pilots must stop before the designated ILS holding position whenever instructed by ATC or required by the published airport procedure.
- Keep the entire aircraft clear, including its wings and tail—not merely the nosewheel.
- Do not cross until authorised by the applicable clearance or procedure.
- Ask ATC if a taxi instruction is ambiguous; marking and phraseology differ between jurisdictions.
- If the boundary is crossed inadvertently, notify ATC immediately and follow instructions rather than reversing or continuing on an assumption.

Does an ILS critical area matter in flight simulators?
In flight simulation, the area matters mainly as an operating procedure because most general-purpose desktop simulators do not dynamically model radio reflections from every AI aircraft or ground vehicle. A vehicle parked beside the glideslope antenna may therefore have no effect on the simulated needles, even though it would be restricted during a real low-visibility approach.
If simulator guidance is unstable or the glideslope will not capture, more likely causes include the wrong frequency or runway, an inactive navigation radio, interception from above the glidepath, a back-course approach, or mismatched scenery and navigation data.
