Learn the difference between ILS Y and ILS Z approaches, what the suffixes mean, why procedures differ, and which chart or FMS entry to use.
An ILS Y approach and an ILS Z approach are two separately published ILS procedures to the same runway. The letters merely distinguish them; they do not indicate ILS category or quality. Their routing, equipment requirements, altitude constraints, minima or missed-approach instructions may differ, so pilots must use the exact cleared procedure.
What do the ILS Y and Z suffixes mean?
In real-world aviation, Y and Z are procedure identifiers rather than performance grades. When more than one approach of the same type serves the same runway, the procedures need distinct names; the letter sequence commonly starts with Z and proceeds backwards through Y and X.
Z is not automatically better than Y, and Y does not mean a less accurate ILS. Neither letter denotes Category I, II or III capability, which is stated separately on the chart and governed by the facility, aircraft, crew and operating approval. On the radio, the suffixes are normally spoken as “Yankee” and “Zulu”.

Can ILS Y and ILS Z use the same frequency?
Yes, ILS Y and Z approaches may use the same localiser and glide-slope transmitters. Once established on final, their indications can therefore look identical even though the arrival routing, altitude constraints, minima or missed approach are different.
The suffix identifies the whole published procedure, not merely the radio signal. Tuning the correct frequency and setting the inbound course does not prove that the correct Y or Z procedure has been loaded or briefed. Which approach should a pilot select?
A pilot should fly the exact suffix assigned by ATC, or select the suitable published procedure by checking routing, equipment, minima and weather when operating without an assigned approach. Never choose Z merely because it sounds like the primary or more capable version.
- Read the full clearance: distinguish “ILS Yankee Runway 27” from “ILS Zulu Runway 27”. Ask ATC for clarification if the suffix is missing or ambiguous.
- Match the chart and avionics: confirm the runway, Y/Z suffix, transition and waypoint sequence. The chart and navigation database should represent the same effective procedure.
- Check the requirements: verify equipment notes, altitude restrictions, minima and any restrictions affecting the aircraft or operation.
- Verify the final approach: cross-check the localiser frequency, inbound course, glide-slope intercept altitude and expected intercept geometry.
- Brief the missed approach: the Y and Z versions may use different headings, fixes, holding patterns or navigation capabilities even when the ILS signal is shared.
A mistake we see frequently in simulators is briefing one suffix while loading the other because both display the same frequency. The aircraft may capture the localiser and glide slope normally, yet the FMS sequencing, altitude constraints and missed approach will belong to the wrong procedure. Why does a simulator show only one ILS version?
A simulator may show only ILS Y or ILS Z because its navigation database, avionics implementation or generated flight plan does not contain the same procedure set as the chart being consulted. Procedure revisions can also rename, replace or remove a suffix while retaining the underlying ILS facility.
Do not combine the final segment from one version with the transitions or missed approach from another. Compare the complete waypoint sequence, constraints and missed-approach legs. If they do not match, treat it as a navigation-data mismatch rather than assuming Y and Z are interchangeable.
