To improve Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 (FS9) graphics, back up FS9.cfg, raise terrain detail only as far as your mesh supports, cap the frame rate so textures can load, and tune bandwidth conservatively. Back up the correct FS9.cfg first

Start with the value generated by the simulator and increase it in small steps only if textures load late while frame delivery remains stable. A sensible frame-rate cap is usually more effective than chasing a large bandwidth number. Set a target FS2004 can maintain at a demanding airport with weather and traffic active; 25 or 30 frames per second is a useful first trial. Why do distant textures become blurry?
Persistent blurries mean FS2004 is being asked to load terrain faster than its main scenery thread can manage. Reduce TERRAIN_EXTENDED_LEVELS first, then lower the extended and default radii if necessary; also use a sustainable frame-rate cap.

Read each package's installation notes and back up every file it replaces. Installing two sky or water packs does not combine their best features: the final installer normally wins, and its uninstaller may restore files belonging to an earlier mod rather than the original FS2004 textures.
Why do replacement textures shimmer or turn black?
Shimmering commonly indicates missing or unsuitable mipmaps, while black or transparent surfaces point to a damaged, missing or incompatible texture or alpha channel. Restore the last changed files and use a mipmapped or compressed variant when the package supplies one.
