How do I increase flight simulator autogen draw distance?

Which setting increases autogen draw distance?

The correct control is the one governing object range or LOD, not object density. Names vary between simulators and versions, but the underlying distinction is the same: draw distance determines how far away objects appear, while density determines how many are placed inside that area.

Object LOD often controls both the distance at which a model appears and when it changes to a simpler model. Terrain LOD governs the radius or resolution of loaded terrain; it can affect terrain-linked buildings and vegetation, but raising it solely to cure object pop-in may waste performance.

How should I change the settings?

Increase the range in small steps and test it separately from density. Changing several scenery controls at once makes it difficult to identify which one caused a frame-rate loss or new stutters.

  1. Load a repeatable test flight. Use the same aircraft, airport, weather and camera position, preferably near a city or wooded area where autogen is easy to judge.
  2. Confirm that the objects are autogen. Generic houses and vegetation normally are; a custom terminal, landmark or add-on building may have its own fixed LOD and culling distance.
  3. Raise object draw distance one step. Increase Object LOD, Rendering Distance or the simulator's equivalent without touching density.
  4. Increase terrain range only if necessary. Raise Terrain LOD or LOD Radius when terrain detail and terrain-linked objects are also loading too close to the aircraft.
  5. Test while moving. Fly towards the scenery and pan the camera. Watch for pauses, main-thread limitation, blurred terrain and abrupt object replacement rather than looking only at average FPS.
  6. Reduce density before surrendering range. A slightly sparser scene visible farther away often looks more convincing than dense buildings appearing in a tight circle around the aircraft.

How can I extend autogen range without losing too much FPS?

The best compromise is usually a longer object range paired with moderate autogen density. The potential ground area covered rises roughly with the square of the radius, so a modest distance increase can ask the simulator to process far more scenery.

  • CPU or main-thread limited: reduce autogen density, road traffic, airport activity and other object-heavy settings.
  • GPU limited: reduce shadows, reflections, anti-aliasing or resolution before cutting draw distance.
  • VRAM limited: lower texture resolution or particularly heavy scenery packages; excessive range can keep more assets resident.
  • Streaming limited: avoid confusing delayed online scenery or photogrammetry with normal autogen culling. Increasing LOD may make the bandwidth demand worse.

Do not maximise Terrain LOD automatically when only buildings are popping in. Terrain range can place a heavy load on the CPU and scenery-streaming system without fixing a custom object's own draw-distance rule.

Why does autogen still pop in at maximum distance?

High draw-distance settings cannot override every scenery or simulator limit. Persistent pop-in usually points to something other than the main graphics slider.

  • Custom scenery has its own LOD: an add-on model may be designed to disappear at a fixed distance.
  • The simulator uses fixed autogen cells: older engines load generated scenery in blocks, making the boundary visible even at their highest supported radius.
  • An adaptive performance feature is active: dynamic quality or target-frame-rate controls may reduce LOD during demanding scenes.
  • The objects are absent rather than distant: exclusions, disabled scenery packages, damaged configuration files or an empty autogen installation require different troubleshooting. Use our checks for missing buildings and trees when nothing appears even close to the aircraft.
  • Data is arriving late: streaming-dependent terrain and photogrammetry can load progressively, which resembles an autogen range problem.

Should I edit the simulator configuration file?

Edit configuration files only after exhausting the in-simulator controls. Close the simulator and back up the original file before changing anything. Values beyond the interface limits may be reset, ignored or produce long loading pauses, blurred terrain and unstable frame pacing. Do not mark the configuration file read-only merely to preserve a tweak, because that can prevent legitimate graphics and simulator settings from being saved.
