Learn what VATSIM is, which client and equipment you need, and how to connect your flight simulator, file a plan and speak to live ATC safely.
VATSIM is a free online network that links flight-simulator pilots with volunteer human air traffic controllers. To use it, create an account, complete the required newcomer orientation, install the pilot client for your simulator, configure voice and model matching, file a flight plan, then connect from a parking stand—not a runway.
What VATSIM actually does
VATSIM adds shared online traffic and human ATC to a compatible desktop flight simulator; it is not a simulator itself. Your simulator flies the aircraft, while a separate pilot client sends its position to the network, receives nearby traffic and handles controller communications.
Other pilots appear through model matching, which substitutes an installed aircraft model matching their transmitted type and airline. The network does not make everyone’s scenery, aircraft systems or weather identical, so occasional visual differences are normal.
Unlike scripted ATC, a VATSIM controller can change a clearance, sequence aircraft, issue a hold or ask a pilot to take a different runway. Our explanation of the difference between built-in and live air traffic control covers that distinction in more detail.
What you need before connecting
You need a VATSIM account, a supported simulator, an approved pilot client, a working microphone and an aircraft you can operate without stopping to learn its systems.
- Microsoft Flight Simulator on PC: vPilot is the usual client. Our MSFS VATSIM setup and connection walkthrough covers installation, voice, flight plans and the first connection.

- FSX, Prepar3D and other desktop simulators: use only a VATSIM-approved client that explicitly supports your simulator and operating system.
- Console editions: the normal setup requires external pilot-client software and simulator data access. Xbox and PlayStation users should not assume that ordinary console multiplayer can connect to VATSIM.
A headset is strongly preferable to speakers because an open microphone can feed controller audio back onto the frequency. Bind a dedicated push-to-talk button that you can reach without releasing the primary flight controls.
How to use VATSIM with a flight simulator
The safe sequence is to prepare the account, aircraft, client and flight before appearing on the network.
- Complete the account requirements. Read the network rules and finish the required newcomer orientation or assessment. Your displayed name and account details must follow VATSIM policy.
- Practise offline first. Be able to start the aircraft, taxi, hold a heading and altitude, manage speed, tune radios and fly the planned arrival. For an IFR flight, practise the basics with our IFR flying guide for simulators before adding live ATC workload.
- Install the correct pilot client. Connect it to the simulator, select the right audio input and output devices, bind push-to-talk and install compatible model-matching aircraft where required.
- Prepare the flight. Choose two familiar airports, check likely controller coverage and load at an unoccupied parking stand. Avoid major events and heavily congested hubs for a first session.
- File the flight plan. Enter the same callsign used by the pilot client, the correct aircraft type, IFR or VFR rules, departure, destination, route and requested cruising level. Incorrect callsigns and aircraft codes create avoidable work for controllers.
- Connect only when stationary. Confirm that the aircraft is at a stand, not on a runway or taxiway. Do not connect while airborne, paused over traffic or positioned inside another aircraft.
- Contact the appropriate controller. Tune the frequency shown in the client, listen before transmitting and make a concise initial call. If a controller sends a contact instruction, respond promptly.
- Follow the clearance. Read back runway, altitude, heading, speed, route and transponder instructions as applicable. Say

What should your first VATSIM flight be?
Your first session should use a familiar aircraft at quieter airports, with a route simple enough that radio calls do not overwhelm the flying.

A small piston aircraft can reduce systems workload, but VFR airspace calls may be less familiar than airline phraseology. A simple IFR flight can be more predictable if you already know the route, avionics and expected approach. Choose by competence, not aircraft size.
Do you need to know ATC phraseology?
You need enough aviation phraseology to understand instructions and give clear readbacks, but controllers do not expect a theatrical radio voice or a perfect accent.
A typical first call might follow this pattern: [Airport] Ground, [callsign], stand [number], IFR to [destination], information [letter], request clearance. Listen first, speak at a normal pace and keep unnecessary detail off the frequency.
Write down clearances until readbacks become automatic. If you cannot comply with a direct route, approach, speed or runway, say so immediately; the controller can often issue an alternative.
What happens when no controller is online?
When no controller covers your position, you continue under the applicable flight rules and coordinate with nearby pilots on the designated advisory frequency.
Make short position and intention calls only when useful to other traffic. The common network advisory frequency is often used, but airport-specific CTAF arrangements and local procedures may apply. There is no human clearance or separation service while the relevant position is offline.
An en-route controller may cover lower positions under local top-down procedures, so an absent tower controller does not always mean the airport is uncontrolled. If ATC comes online and asks you to make contact, tune the stated frequency and call without unnecessary delay.
Common VATSIM problems and fixes
Most first-session failures come from audio selection, radio tuning, callsign mismatches or incomplete model matching rather than the network itself.

A mistake we see constantly is using VATSIM to learn an unfamiliar airliner while also attempting live radio work. Learn the aircraft offline; use VATSIM to practise shared operations and communication.
