Return to cockpit view in any flight simulator, with commands for MSFS, FSX, Prepar3D, X-Plane and DCS plus fixes for stuck cameras.
To return to the cockpit or pilot view in most flight simulators, including Microsoft Flight Simulator, X-Plane, FSX, Prepar3D and DCS, exit any external, drone or free-camera mode and select Cockpit, Flight Deck or Pilot. If its shortcut fails, find that camera command in the controls menu and rebind it.
How do I get back into the cockpit?
Use the simulator’s camera categories rather than cycling blindly through every available view.
- Exit the special camera mode. Close Drone, Showcase, Free Camera, Walkaround or any aircraft-exploration mode first. These modes can intercept the normal cockpit shortcut.
- Open the camera or view menu. Select a category named Cockpit, Internal, Flight Deck, Pilot or Virtual Cockpit.
- Choose the normal pilot position. Avoid instrument close-ups and saved custom cameras until you are back in the standard seat.
- Reset the view if necessary. Use the command named Reset Cockpit View, Default Pilot View or a similar term if the camera returns inside the aircraft but faces the wrong direction.
Microsoft Flight Simulator has several camera systems that behave independently. Our breakdown of MSFS camera modes and control-profile fixes explains the distinction between cockpit, external, drone and walkaround views.
Which cockpit-view shortcut should I use?
The default shortcut depends on the simulator, platform and active control profile.
| Simulator | Usual route to the cockpit | Common complication |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024 | Select Cockpit from the camera menu, or use the command bound to Cockpit/External View Mode. Default PC keyboard profiles commonly use End. | Drone, Showcase or Walkaround mode may need to be closed separately. |
| FSX and Prepar3D | Press S to cycle to Cockpit or Virtual Cockpit; A cycles views within that category. | Older aircraft may offer a 2D cockpit but no modelled virtual cockpit. |
| X-Plane | The default keyboard profile uses Shift+9 for the 3-D cockpit. | A customised keyboard profile may replace that assignment. |
| DCS | Press F1 for the player aircraft’s cockpit. | The command will not place you in an aircraft that you are only observing. |
On Xbox—and on PlayStation 5 for MSFS 2024—the displayed controller combination depends on the selected control preset. Search the controls screen for the command name rather than relying on a button combination copied from another platform.
Why does the cockpit shortcut not work?
A cockpit shortcut usually fails because the wrong control profile is active, another command has the same binding, or a free-camera mode still has control.
- Check the active device profile. A keyboard, controller, joystick and yoke can each have separate assignments.
- Search by command name. Look for Cockpit, Internal View, Pilot View, Virtual Cockpit or Cockpit/External View Mode.
- Clear binding conflicts. One button assigned to both a camera toggle and another function can produce inconsistent results.
- Close menus and text fields. Keyboard focus inside a search box or overlay can prevent the simulator receiving the shortcut.
- Leave free-camera mode explicitly. Repeatedly pressing the cockpit/external toggle may do nothing while the drone or showcase camera remains active.
If the entire cockpit category has disappeared rather than merely being difficult to select, follow our recovery steps for a vanished virtual cockpit and pilot viewpoint.
What if the cockpit returns in the wrong position?
Reset the pilot eyepoint before changing zoom or creating another saved camera.
A view looking into the seat, roof or instrument panel usually means the camera position has been translated, not zoomed. Use the simulator’s reset cockpit-view command; in VR, sit naturally and run the VR recentre command as well.
Once the position is correct, MSFS users can store the corrected eyepoint as a custom cockpit camera. If the seat position is right but the panel appears too close or distant, adjust the field of view using these cockpit zoom methods instead of moving the camera.
Why is there no cockpit view for one aircraft?
If cockpit view is missing from only one aircraft, the aircraft package or selected variant is usually the cause rather than the global camera settings.
Test a default aircraft first. If its cockpit works, the affected add-on may lack a modelled 3D interior, provide only a 2D panel, use a separate cockpit-equipped variant or have incomplete files. This is especially common with older FSX-era aircraft converted for another simulator.
If every aircraft is affected, test a default camera or control profile before reinstalling anything. That quickly separates a global binding or configuration fault from an aircraft-specific problem.
