What causes joystick assignments to change?

Most apparent binding changes are profile-selection or device-detection problems rather than spontaneous remapping.

If the controls screen still shows the original assignment but the cockpit does something different, the binding itself has not changed. Look for a duplicate command, an active modifier, an aircraft-specific control, assistance logic or input software intercepting the button.

How simulator control profiles differ

Profile scope varies between simulators, which explains why the same hardware can appear consistent in one title and unpredictable in another.

  • Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024: presets are associated with individual detected devices. Selecting the throttle rather than the joystick, or activating another preset, reveals a different set of assignments.   • X-Plane: control profiles can be associated with particular aircraft. Loading another aircraft may therefore switch profiles automatically.
  • DCS: control sets are module-specific and separated by device. Modifiers can also make one button perform several functions without changing its displayed binding.
  • FSX, Prepar3D and older simulators: assignments depend heavily on stored configuration data and recognised device IDs. A regenerated configuration or newly detected controller can restore defaults.

How do I stop joystick bindings from resetting?

Make the active profile, USB identity and input layer predictable, then prove that one test assignment survives a restart before rebuilding the whole layout.

  1. Confirm the selected device and profile. Open the controls screen, select the physical joystick rather than the keyboard, throttle or gamepad, and note the exact active profile. Use the assigned-controls filter and press the suspect button if the simulator supports input search. A mistake we see constantly is editing the right command under the wrong controller.
  2. Create a named custom profile. Clone a working preset where possible, change one button, apply or save it, and exit the controls screen normally. Default presets may be protected or regenerated, while a custom profile is intended to hold personal assignments.
  3. Clear genuine conflicts. Search by input and inspect every connected device. A label such as Button 1 appearing on both a joystick and throttle is normal because numbering is usually device-specific; it becomes a problem when both devices are bound to the same unwanted action.   4. Keep the USB arrangement stable. Connect controllers before launching the simulator, use the same ports where practical and avoid switching the hardware between combined, split or compatibility modes. Changing ports should not affect a controller with a stable device identifier, but some drivers, hubs and mode switches expose it as a new device.
  5. Use one remapping layer. Vendor utilities, virtual controllers and platform-level controller translation can all alter what reaches the simulator. Temporarily disable them for diagnosis. If a virtual controller is required, bind either that virtual device or the original physical device—not both.
  6. Control synchronisation conflicts. Close the simulator cleanly and avoid editing the same profile on two systems at once. If the platform asks which settings copy to retain, choose the known good profile rather than assuming the synchronised copy is newer.
  7. Test persistence. Restart the simulator with the same aircraft and controller arrangement. If the single test binding has disappeared before anything was unplugged, check whether the settings location is writable, whether security software is blocking changes, or whether the simulator is crashing before it saves. Back up or export the stable profile when that facility exists.

How can I tell whether the joystick or simulator is at fault?

Test the raw controller input outside the simulator; stable button numbers there point to a simulator profile or remapping problem.

  • If every button remains stable in Windows but assignments differ in the sim, investigate profiles, synchronisation and duplicate bindings.
  • If the device disappears, reconnects or reports different buttons, investigate its cable, USB hub, driver and hardware mode.
  • If the assignment screen is unchanged but the in-flight action is wrong, inspect modifiers, duplicate commands and aircraft-specific controls.
  • If the problem occurs with only one aircraft or module, check its associated profile before altering the global controller setup.

Should I reset all controller bindings?

Reset bindings only after saving or exporting any working profiles, because a reset removes the evidence that helps identify the actual cause.

Reset the affected device or profile first rather than clearing every keyboard, joystick, throttle and pedal assignment. Microsoft Flight Simulator users can follow the safer procedure to reset or clear an MSFS controller profile. If defaults immediately change again, the underlying issue is still the active profile, device identity, synchronisation or external input layer—not the bindings themselves.
